Used Haier washing machines in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Haier washing machine worth buying?

Haier makes washing machines in Pakistan, and the HWM-coded top-load automatics are what most second-hand stock consists of; HW codes are front loaders and a different proposition. On a top loader the drum, clutch and brake all hang off one shaft assembly, so that is what a used one is judged on — not the pump or the inlet valve, which are cheap and stocked everywhere.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Haier washing-machine parts are among the easiest to find in Islamabad and Rawalpindi: pumps, inlet valves, lid switches, pulsators, belts and hoses sit on shelves in the independent trade as well as in the company's own service network. Shaft assemblies and control boards are ordered against the HWM code.

Checking a used Haier washing machine

These are specific to Haier. The general washing machines checks apply too and are on the washing machines page.

Read the HWM number

HWM marks a top-load machine and HW a front loader, and the first group of digits tracks drum capacity in kilograms. Pumps, valves, shaft assemblies and boards are ordered against the whole string, because near-identical cabinets differ inside across model years.

Watch the clutch

Start a wash cycle and look at the drum, not the pulsator. On a top-load automatic the drum should stay still while the pulsator turns; a drum that creeps round with it means the clutch or brake band is worn, and on these that means lifting out the whole shaft assembly.

Ask which E-code appears

Haier automatics stop and put an E-code on the display rather than failing quietly, and the codes separate fill, drain and lid faults from one another. Get the seller to say which one has been showing, then watch the machine run that stage.

Check the pulsator bolt

Prise off the cap in the centre of the pulsator and check that the bolt underneath is present and tight. A pulsator that has been running loose chews the splines on the shaft, and the shaft is not sold on its own.

What Haier washing machines are worth

  • Drum, clutch and brake come out as one assembly on these top loaders, so a machine that rumbles or creeps is a labour job — that single fault moves a Haier out of the straightforward resale market and into the repair trade.
  • Capacity is written into the HWM number, so a buyer can verify it instead of taking a claim, and two equally tired machines separate on that figure alone.
  • The HW front loaders move more slowly than the top loaders, because they want a plumbed inlet and a solid floor while a great many homes here run off an overhead tank.

General washing machines checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the washing machines page covers them in full.

Spin the empty drum

With the machine off, turn the drum through a full rotation by hand. It should move smoothly and quietly. A rumble, a grinding note or side-to-side play means worn drum bearings, and on most front loaders the tub has to come apart to reach them, which rarely makes sense on a used machine.

Run a cycle with water

Ask for a rinse-and-spin with the machine actually filling. Watch that it takes water at a reasonable rate, drains fully, and reaches full spin without walking across the floor. Slow filling is usually a clogged inlet filter; refusing to spin with a wet load is often a worn belt, coupler or motor.

Fold back the door seal

On a front loader, peel the rubber boot back all the way round. Black mould in the folds is cleanable. Tears, splits or a seal that has been patched with adhesive are not, and a compromised boot leaks onto the floor at every wash.

Test the spinner separately

On a semi-automatic, the spin tub has its own motor and a lid interlock. Load it with a wet cloth and run it. Heavy vibration, a screech at start-up, or a spinner that keeps turning with the lid open are all faults, and the last one is a safety problem rather than an inconvenience.

Open the pump filter

Undo the filter at the front and look at what comes out. Grit and hair are normal. A cracked filter housing, or a drain hose with a taped repair, tells you the machine has been leaking, and water stains under the base panel are worth more than any verbal assurance.

Step through the programmes

Select each programme and confirm the machine changes what it actually does, not just what the display shows. An error code that clears when the machine is unplugged and returns mid-cycle points at the control board, which is the second expensive repair after bearings.

Haier washing machines — questions

Is a used Haier automatic washing machine a good buy?

For most buyers it is, because Haier builds locally and the parts that fail most often — pump, inlet valve, lid switch, hoses — are stocked in both cities, so a common fault stays worth fixing. The one to walk away from is the shaft: a drum that creeps round with the pulsator, or rumbles through a spin, means the clutch and bearing assembly, which is a labour job.

What does the HWM code on a Haier washing machine mean?

HWM marks a top-load machine and HW a front loader, and the digits that follow track drum capacity in kilograms before the rest of the string identifies the variant. Quote all of it when ordering, because cabinets that look identical differ inside across model years. It is also the quickest way to check a seller's claim about capacity.
