Used Gaba National washing machines in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Gaba National washing machine worth buying?
Gaba National is a long-established Pakistani appliance maker whose washing line runs from plain twin tubs to standalone spin dryers and washer-dryer combinations, all carrying GN- model numbers. Second-hand they sit in the same bracket as Super Asia and Boss, but what decides whether one is worth restoring is the moulded body and tub, which only a GN dealer can match to the model.
Made or assembled in Pakistan
Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.
Motors, timers, belts, lid switches and drain valves for Gaba National machines are ordinary bazaar stock in both cities and need no model code. The GN-specific items — shell mouldings, spin baskets, lids and pulsators — are ordered against the model number through the brand's dealers, so photograph the plate before anything is dismantled.

Checking a used Gaba National washing machine
These are specific to Gaba National. The general washing machines checks apply too and are on the washing machines page.
Time the spin brake
Gaba National sells spin dryers on their own as well as inside its twin tubs, and the brake is what a standalone unit is judged on. Lift the lid while the basket is turning: it should be dragged to a stop within a few seconds, and one that keeps spinning has a worn pad or a detached lid actuator.
Sight along the mouldings
Look down the corner mouldings and around the lid hinges for stress whitening, the pale line that shows before plastic cracks. Machines kept on an open veranda go this way first, and the shell is a GN moulding matched to the model number rather than a part any shop keeps.
Lift the pulsator disc
The pulsator in the wash tub is a GN part matched to the model, not a generic disc. Check the fins are not rounded off and the centre screw boss has not stripped, because a tub that fills and turns without moving the wash is usually this rather than the motor.
Check the lid fitment
Twin-tub lids are moulded per model, which makes a lid borrowed from another machine an easy substitution to miss. One that sits proud, rocks on its posts or has been trimmed to fit lets water out of the spin tub under load and loads the hinge posts until they break.
What Gaba National washing machines are worth
- The mouldings decide the grade: shell, tub, lid and pulsator are GN parts quoted against the model number, so a machine with a legible plate can be restored and one with the plate rubbed off cannot be quoted at all.
- A standalone spin dryer is priced on its basket and its brake alone, because the household buying one already owns a washer and is buying the spin function by itself.
- Plastic-bodied machines that have lived outdoors lose value through stress cracking rather than mechanical wear, which is why two machines of the same age can grade very differently.

General washing machines checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the washing machines page covers them in full.
Spin the empty drum
With the machine off, turn the drum through a full rotation by hand. It should move smoothly and quietly. A rumble, a grinding note or side-to-side play means worn drum bearings, and on most front loaders the tub has to come apart to reach them, which rarely makes sense on a used machine.
Run a cycle with water
Ask for a rinse-and-spin with the machine actually filling. Watch that it takes water at a reasonable rate, drains fully, and reaches full spin without walking across the floor. Slow filling is usually a clogged inlet filter; refusing to spin with a wet load is often a worn belt, coupler or motor.
Fold back the door seal
On a front loader, peel the rubber boot back all the way round. Black mould in the folds is cleanable. Tears, splits or a seal that has been patched with adhesive are not, and a compromised boot leaks onto the floor at every wash.
Test the spinner separately
On a semi-automatic, the spin tub has its own motor and a lid interlock. Load it with a wet cloth and run it. Heavy vibration, a screech at start-up, or a spinner that keeps turning with the lid open are all faults, and the last one is a safety problem rather than an inconvenience.
Open the pump filter
Undo the filter at the front and look at what comes out. Grit and hair are normal. A cracked filter housing, or a drain hose with a taped repair, tells you the machine has been leaking, and water stains under the base panel are worth more than any verbal assurance.
Step through the programmes
Select each programme and confirm the machine changes what it actually does, not just what the display shows. An error code that clears when the machine is unplugged and returns mid-cycle points at the control board, which is the second expensive repair after bearings.
