Used Orient shop & restaurant equipment in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Orient shop & restaurant equipment worth buying?

Orient manufactures in Lahore, and the part of its range a shop actually buys used is water dispensers first, then chest freezers, showroom air conditioners and kitchen extraction. The thing to know before handing over money is that Orient sells more than one cooling technology under the same product name: two dispensers can look identical from the front and cool by entirely different means.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Orient manufactures locally with dealer coverage in both cities, but the parts a dispenser actually needs — taps, hot tanks, thermostats, thermal cut-outs — come off the shelf at the small workshops that repair dispensers, which is a different counter from an appliance dealer. Inverter boards for its air conditioners are ordered against the model and are the slowest item to arrive.

Checking a used Orient shop & restaurant equipment

These are specific to Orient. The general shop & restaurant equipment checks apply too and are on the shop & restaurant equipment page.

Find the cooling type

Orient's dispenser range spans compressor cooling and thermoelectric cooling, and the two are indistinguishable from the front. Look underneath and behind for a compressor and a refrigerant marking; a thermoelectric unit cools slowly through a fan and heatsink, never gets properly cold, and cannot be regassed.

Cooled cabinet or cupboard

Dispensers with a cabinet in the base are advertised as "with refrigerator" whether the compartment is actually cooled or is simply a cupboard. Run the machine, leave it, then put your hand inside; on a cooled cabinet you will also find an evaporator or a duct rather than plain lining.

Note the air-conditioner series

Orient badges its air conditioners by series, Ultron on the inverter models, and an inverter unit is repaired at board level. Note the badge and the outdoor unit's model, because the board is ordered against it and is the part that keeps a showroom unit off longest.

Check a bottom loader's pump

If the dispenser draws from a bottle in the base rather than one inverted on top, the pump, hose and bottle cap are specific to the machine and it does nothing without them. Confirm they are included before the unit is moved.

What Orient shop & restaurant equipment are worth

  • A compressor dispenser holds value far better than a thermoelectric one of the same age and badge, because it can be repaired and regassed while the other can only be replaced.
  • Completeness decides dispensers: taps, drip tray, bottle seat and, on bottom-loading models, the pump are all matched to the machine, so an incomplete unit sits unsold.
  • On inverter air conditioners the value follows the board rather than the compressor, since the board is the model-specific order and everything else is ordinary refrigeration work.
  • Wear items for Orient dispensers are common enough that a tired machine is worth restoring, which keeps demand steady even for cosmetically poor units.

General shop & restaurant equipment checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the shop & restaurant equipment page covers them in full.

Watch the chiller cycle off

A bottle cooler or display chiller that has been running for an hour should reach its set temperature and then switch the compressor off for a spell. A compressor that never stops is fighting low gas, a blocked condenser or a dead thermostat, and you can hear the difference from across the shop.

Test door seals with paper

Close the door on a slip of paper and pull it out. If it slides free with no drag, the magnetic gasket has hardened and warm air is being drawn in all day. Gaskets can be replaced, but a perished one usually comes with ice built up on the evaporator and a compressor that has been overworking for months.

Try a magnet on steelwork

Much prep furniture here is fabricated locally, so the sheet grade matters more than any badge. A fridge magnet grips thin 430-grade sheet firmly and barely holds on 304, which resists pitting far better around sinks and salt. Then look underneath at the legs, where mopping water rusts a table from the floor upwards.

Light every burner

On a commercial range, griddle or tandoor, each burner should light from its pilot or neighbour and hold a steady blue flame with no yellow tips. Lazy yellow flames and soot on the pan bottoms point at blocked jets, or jets sized for a different gas pressure. Check that the control valves turn smoothly rather than grinding.

Check the extraction canopy

Pull the baffle filters out and see that they are all there and can still be washed rather than being clogged solid with hardened grease. Switch the fan on and hold a tissue flat against the filter opening; the draw should hold it in place. Missing filters, a fan that hums without pulling, or grease weeping back out of the ductwork mean a fire risk and a deep clean before the kitchen can open.

Run the mixer through speeds

A spiral or planetary mixer should change speed without a knock from the gearbox and should not walk across the floor on its feet. On a fryer, check that the element and thermostat probe lift clear for cleaning, and that baskets, lid and drain tap are all present, since they are model specific and awkward to source separately.

Orient shop & restaurant equipment — questions

Why is the water from my used Orient dispenser not properly cold?

Most often because it cools thermoelectrically rather than by compressor. Orient sells both and they look identical from the front: a thermoelectric dispenser uses a fan and heatsink, takes far longer to bring water down, never reaches the temperature a compressor unit does, and cannot be regassed. Look underneath and behind for a compressor and a refrigerant marking before paying anyone to find a leak.

Which used Orient equipment makes sense for a shop?

Dispensers and chest freezers, mostly, because their wear parts — taps, hot tanks, thermostats, relays — are common and cheap to fit. Air conditioners depend on which series: a fixed-speed unit is ordinary refrigeration work for any technician, while an Ultron inverter model is repaired at board level and the board is ordered against the model.
