Used Bosch heaters & geysers in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Bosch heaters & geyser worth buying?
Bosch water heaters reach Pakistan as imports, in two families worth telling apart: Therm gas instantaneous heaters and Tronic electric storage units. Both are well made, and both are appliances whose valves, ignition and heat exchangers come from a European parts catalogue. Before anything else, check the plate actually carries a Therm or Tronic designation, because the badge alone travels easily.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
Everything consumable on one of these is an import: gas valves, ignition units, injector sets, anodes and heat exchangers are ordered from the Bosch and Junkers catalogue rather than pulled off a shelf in Rawalpindi. Independent gas technicians in both cities will work on them, but only if the full designation on the plate has survived, because that is what a supplier orders against.

Checking a used Bosch heaters & geyser
These are specific to Bosch. The general heaters & geysers checks apply too and are on the heaters & geysers page.
Read the full designation
Bosch codes the specification into the model designation — family, output and control type — so write down every character on the plate rather than just Therm or Bosch. Two heaters from the same family can differ in flow rate and ignition, and nothing can be ordered without the complete code.
Check the gas category
The data plate states the gas the appliance was built and set for, natural gas or LPG, along with its rated inlet pressure and destination market. A unit set for LPG needs the correct Bosch injector set before it will run properly on Sui gas, and that kit is an order rather than a bazaar item.
Look for the Junkers name
Bosch's gas water heaters were sold for years under the Junkers badge, and the same appliance turns up here under either name. A Junkers plate is not a warning sign, and knowing the two are the same widens the search when you are hunting a valve or an exchanger.
Inspect the heat exchanger
Look into the fins for soot and for white scale: soot means the burner and flue need investigating, and heavy scale in hard-water areas is what finishes these units. It matters more on a Bosch than on a local instant heater, because a local copper coil can be re-made in a workshop while this exchanger is a catalogue part.
Ask about the anode
On Tronic electric storage models, ask when the magnesium anode was last replaced and look for rust staining at the tank fittings. The anode is the consumable that protects the enamelled tank, and a neglected one is why a storage heater eventually leaks rather than simply stops heating.
What Bosch heaters & geysers are worth
- Identification is the value here: a plate carrying a full Therm or Tronic designation and serial keeps the parts route open, while a Bosch-badged heater with no catalogue code is worth what any unidentified heater is worth.
- Gas-category match sets the price of entry, because a unit built and set for LPG needs the right injector set before it heats properly on Sui gas and that is an imported order.
- Heat-exchanger condition is the practical ceiling, since a local instant heater's coil can be re-made by a workshop and this one cannot.
- A Junkers badge costs nothing in value once the code checks out, as it is the same appliance from the same catalogue.

General heaters & geysers checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the heaters & geysers page covers them in full.
Look at the flame
Light a gas geyser or room heater and watch the burner for a full minute. Steady blue cones with clean edges are right. Yellow, lazy or lifting flames, or black soot on the burner shield and the ceramic plaques, mean incomplete combustion from blocked jets or a wrong air mix — a servicing job at best and a safety matter at worst.
Drain water from the base
Open the drain valve at the bottom of a storage geyser and catch a jugful. Clear water is fine. Brown water, rust flakes or grit means the inner tank is corroding from the inside, and once a tank has begun to perforate no patch holds for long. Water that no longer stays hot as long as it used to points the same way, because sediment has filled the tank floor.
Check the flue and diverter
On a gas geyser, look where the flue pipe meets the hood. Rust flaking off the collar, or soot smudged around the draught diverter and on the wall above it, says exhaust has been spilling into the room instead of going up the pipe. That is a fitting fault rather than a machine fault, but it tells you how the unit has been run.
Watch the pilot after lighting
Hold the control knob in, light the pilot, then release it. A pilot that dies every time usually means a tired thermocouple or a dirty pilot jet, both inexpensive. Confirm which it is before agreeing anything, because on some models the same symptom comes from a failing gas valve, which is a different repair altogether.
Check the radiator seams
On an oil-filled radiator, warm it through, then run a hand along the fin seams and the bottom edge, looking for weeping oil or a greasy film that has trapped dust. These are filled and sealed at the factory: a leaking one cannot sensibly be topped up, and it will smoke off the element as the level drops.
Check the element and earth
An electric geyser that takes far longer than it should to heat normally has an element buried in scale, which is common with the hard water here. Look at the plug top and cord for melting at the pins, confirm the appliance has a proper earth, and on a fan or halogen heater make sure the guard and the tip-over switch both work.
