Used Changhong Ruba water dispensers & coolers in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Changhong Ruba water dispensers & cooler worth buying?

Changhong Ruba is the joint venture between the Chinese manufacturer and the Ruba group, assembling in Lahore. Two things follow for a used dispenser. The plate tells you whether yours is a JV build or a directly imported Changhong, which decides who will service it; and the Changhong group includes a compressor manufacturer, so the compressor label under the cabinet is worth reading.

Assembled locally under licence

An established local service network means genuine parts are obtainable and repairs are generally worth doing.

Service and spares run through the joint venture's own network in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, so thermostats, taps, elements and compressors are obtainable locally rather than imported. Control boards and moulded cabinet parts are model-specific orders, and a directly imported Changhong sits outside that channel altogether.

Checking a used Changhong Ruba water dispensers & cooler

These are specific to Changhong Ruba. The general water dispensers & coolers checks apply too and are on the water dispensers & coolers page.

Check the plate origin

A unit assembled by the joint venture carries Changhong Ruba branding and a Pakistani service address; a directly imported Changhong carries neither, and often shows Chinese-market labelling instead. The difference is not the hardware but the route, since only the first is straightforwardly booked into the local parts network.

Read the compressor label

The Changhong group includes a compressor manufacturer, and compressors of that type are common in the local refrigeration trade. Note the model, capacity and refrigerant from the label, because a like-for-like replacement is then a stock item rather than something to be imported.

Find the temperature control

Behind the rear panel there will either be a mechanical thermostat with a capillary tube clipped to the tank, or a control board feeding a display. The first is a generic counter part, the second is model-specific and has to be ordered, so establish which the machine has before judging it.

Look at the wiring joints

Locally assembled machines are wired at the plant with crimped terminals and an earth landed on the metal back panel. Twisted joints, insulating tape and a disconnected earth are later rework, and they say the machine has already been inside someone's workshop.

What Changhong Ruba water dispensers & coolers are worth

  • A JV plate keeps a machine inside the local service network, which is the difference between ordering a part and importing one; a directly imported Changhong of the same design has no such route.
  • Compressors of the group's own type are common in the local trade, so a compressor failure on one of these is a like-for-like swap rather than the end of the machine.
  • Electronic control panels are the weak point for value, because a failed board is a model-specific order while a capillary thermostat is a counter part — two machines that look identical can be worth quite different things for that reason.

General water dispensers & coolers checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the water dispensers & coolers page covers them in full.

Check how it cools

A compressor dispenser cools the way a fridge does and will bring water to a properly cold drinking temperature; a thermoelectric one uses a solid-state plate and only takes the edge off. Look behind the cabinet for a small black cylinder and warm coils, then fill the tanks, switch the cold side on and come back after twenty minutes. Merely cool water after that long means lost gas or a failed plate.

Test the hot tank

With water in the tanks, switch the hot side on and wait around ten minutes; the indicator should cycle and the red tap should give water hot enough to steam. Nothing at all usually means a burnt element or a tripped cut-out, and a tank thick with scale gives a slow, spitting flow.

Look for crust and rust

Pull the drip tray and look underneath and at the rear panel below the taps. A white mineral bloom, rust streaks or a stained cabinet floor means a slow weep that has been running a while. On most dispensers the cold tank is foamed into the cabinet, so a seam leak means stripping the machine rather than tightening a joint.

Work every tap

Press each tap fully and release it. A tap that keeps dripping after release has a perished washer, which is cheap to put right but tells you how much use the unit has had. Check the tap bodies and levers for cracks, and on push-button models make sure the button springs back rather than sticking in.

Open the bottle seat

Inspect the seat and probe the bottle sits on for cracks and for a hardened, dirty seal, since that is where most contamination gets in. Open the storage or refrigerated compartment door, work the hinge and check the gasket; on a compressor model a compartment that never gets cold points at a blockage in the cooling circuit rather than a door problem.

Look inside a deck cooler

On a steel electric cooler, lift the lid and look at the coil and tank walls. Water in both cities is hard, and heavy scale on the coil slows cooling badly, though it can be scrubbed off. Rust blooming along the base seam of the outer cabinet is more serious than surface rust on the side panels, because the base is what carries the weight of a full tank.

Changhong Ruba water dispensers & coolers — questions

Is Changhong Ruba locally made or imported?

It is a joint venture: the Chinese manufacturer and the Ruba group assemble in Lahore. For a used buyer the plate settles it — a JV-built unit carries Changhong Ruba branding and a Pakistani service address, and that is what puts it inside the local parts and service network. A directly imported Changhong of the same design does not have that route.

What happens if the control panel fails on a Changhong Ruba dispenser?

On a model with a touch panel or display, the control board is specific to that model and has to be ordered through the joint venture's network, so a working panel is worth confirming before you buy. Models using a mechanical thermostat avoid the problem entirely, since a capillary thermostat is a generic part that any refrigeration counter carries.
