Used Yamaha books, music & hobbies in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Yamaha books, music & hobbie worth buying?
Yamaha instruments reach Pakistan as imports rather than local production, and the model prefix is how the market prices them: PSR-E portables, PSR-S and SX arrangers used at weddings, DGX and P-series digital pianos bought for lessons, and F310 and FG acoustics. Condition varies more than age does, because a board that has gigged shows a worn DC socket long before its sound engine tires.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
Because Yamaha instruments are imported rather than built here, contact strips, key sets and DC jacks are ordered in and take time to arrive. The routine work — jack resoldering, contact cleaning, speaker and potentiometer replacement — is handled by general instrument technicians in Islamabad and Rawalpindi using parts that are not Yamaha-specific.
Checking a used Yamaha books, music & hobbie
These are specific to Yamaha. The general books, music & hobbies checks apply too and are on the books, music & hobbies page.
Read the model prefix
Yamaha's naming tells you what to test: PSR-E is 61 unweighted notes, PSR-EW is 76, and DGX and P-series are 88 with graded hammer action. Play the whole span the prefix implies, since a dead note at either end is easy to walk past.
Wiggle the DC socket
The barrel socket on PSR-E and DGX boards loosens where the adaptor has been pulled out by the lead. With the board switched on, move the plug about in the socket and listen for the sound cutting.
Confirm a PA adaptor
PSR and P-series boards expect a Yamaha PA-series supply at the voltage and polarity marked beside the socket. An under-rated generic brick makes the board reset mid-play, which is often mistaken for a fault in the board itself.
Ask how styles are stored
Arrangers from the PSR-8000/9000 and PSR-2000/3000 generation load styles from a 3.5-inch floppy drive, while the PSR-S and SX line that replaced them uses USB. Blank disks and working drives are scarce now, so this decides whether the style library can be used at all.
Sight down the guitar neck
On F310 and FG acoustics check the relief and the string height at the twelfth fret, then read the label inside the soundhole to confirm the model. The F310 is a laminate-top instrument while much of the FG line is solid-topped, and that changes what a bridge or top repair is worth doing.
What Yamaha books, music & hobbies are worth
- PSR-S and SX arrangers hold value better than the PSR-E boards below them, because working wedding and church players buy by model number for the style set and no locally made instrument substitutes for it.
- The prefix does most of the pricing: DGX and P-series boards with graded hammer action sit above PSR portables whatever their condition, since the action is the one thing that cannot be added later.
- A missing PA adaptor, sustain pedal or stand pulls the offer down out of proportion to the part, because each has to be ordered separately through an imported-accessory shop before the board is usable.
- Floppy-era arrangers sit below the USB generation of the same family, as their style and registration library is stranded on a medium buyers can no longer read or copy.

General books, music & hobbies checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the books, music & hobbies page covers them in full.
Check the edition page
On a textbook or exam preparation set, the edition is most of the value. Read the copyright page for the edition number and printing year, and check whether an online access code or disc that came with the book has already been redeemed, because a used code cannot be passed on.
Open the book flat
Hold it open at the middle and look along the spine. Glued paperbacks crack and start shedding pages in blocks. Fan the pages for loose sections, highlighter running through the whole text, silverfish holes, and the wavy edges that mean the book has been wet at some point.
Smell a stored box
Books kept in a damp store room or under a leaking roof smell musty, and the smell does not leave. Look at the closed page edges for the brown speckling of foxing and for grey-green mould. If one book in a box has it, treat the whole box as a single problem.
Hold discs to the light
Tilt a CD or DVD against a lamp and look for pin-holes or a bronze tinge creeping in from the edge, which means the reflective layer is lifting and the disc is finished. Concentric scratches read worse than radial ones. On cassettes, check the tape is wound evenly and not crinkled.
Count every game piece
Work through a board game or model kit against its piece list and rules sheet before agreeing anything. One missing pawn, die or rules leaflet turns a boxed game into a parts box when the title is out of production. Check the box corners, which is where storage damage shows first.
Run the motors and servos
On remote-control models, drones and motorised telescope mounts, fit a known-good battery and work every control: the motor should spin up without grinding or stalling, servos should answer at once and return to centre, and a mount should track smoothly rather than stepping. Refuse any pack that is swollen or leaking, and check the charger and connectors are present and matching.
