Used Ravi bikes, scooters & e-bikes in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Ravi bikes, scooters & e-bike worth buying?

Second-hand, Ravi in this category almost always means the Piaggio Storm 125, built by Ravi Automobile with Piaggio. It is the odd one out among local 125s: it is not a copy of the pattern everyone else follows, it runs a five-speed box and electric start, and its parts do not come off the general counter.

Assembled locally under licence

An established local service network means genuine parts are obtainable and repairs are generally worth doing.

Ravi assembles the Storm locally with Piaggio-derived mechanicals, and that engine is not the one the pattern-parts market serves, so consumables come through Ravi's own dealers or the used-parts trade rather than off a general counter. Bear in mind that Ravi Piaggio's three-wheeler business is a separate parts line — a dealer who supplies those will not necessarily have Storm parts on the shelf.

These are specific to Ravi. The general bikes, scooters & e-bikes checks apply too and are on the bikes, scooters & e-bikes page.

Ride it to fifth

The Storm has a five-speed box where the copied 125s have four, so buyers arriving from those never think to test the top gear. Find somewhere you can hold fifth under load, because gearbox and clutch parts for this engine are not in the pattern-parts pool.

Look at the silencer

A generic replacement silencer or air-filter housing is a useful tell: the original failed and the correct part was not found. It also changes how an engine set up as a Euro-II unit breathes, which shows in fuel use and plug colour.

Ask what has been replaced

On a machine outside the copied-pattern pool, the seller's sourcing history is worth more than the odometer. Ask which parts have been changed, with what, and which shop supplied them.

Feel the steering head

The Storm carries a large fuel tank for a 125, so there is real weight over the front end. Lift the front wheel clear, turn the bars slowly and feel for a notch at straight-ahead — indented steering-head bearings are a part you order rather than buy.

What Ravi bikes, scooters & e-bikes are worth

  • The Storm's engine is not a copy of the local pattern, so its consumables are sourced rather than stocked; that thins the queue of buyers and is the main drag on its value.
  • A documented sourcing history supports the assessment here in a way it would not on a pattern-parts commuter, because it removes the buyer's main unknown.
  • Original silencer, air-filter housing and controls hold value better than they would on a commuter, since nearest-fit substitutes are visible and suggest the correct parts could not be found.

General bikes, scooters & e-bikes checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the bikes, scooters & e-bikes page covers them in full.

Read the chassis and engine numbers

The chassis number is stamped on the frame near the steering head and the engine number on the crankcase. Both must match the registration book character for character. Numbers that have been filed, re-stamped, painted over or welded around stop the bike from being transferred, and that is the one fault which ends a sale on the spot.

Start it from cold yourself

Ask that the bike has not been run that morning. A sound 70 or 125 fires within a couple of kicks and settles to a steady idle without the choke being held open. A cloud of blue smoke at start-up means worn rings or valve stem seals, while a top-end rattle that fades as it warms is often valve clearance but can be the cam chain tensioner.

Lift the chain off the sprocket

At the three o'clock position on the rear sprocket, pull the chain away from the teeth. If it lifts far enough to show daylight, chain and sprockets are finished as a set. Look at the teeth too: hooked, pointed profiles mean the set ran long past its life, and a worn chain left over-tight also wears the gearbox output shaft.

Bounce the front end and brake

Squeeze the front brake and push the bike forward. The forks should compress and return smoothly with no clunk, and the stanchions should be dry, since oil on a fork leg means the seal has gone. Check the wear indicator arrow on drum brakes, and roll the bike slowly to listen for a rumble from the wheel bearings.

Trace the wiring and try the self-start

Look for taped joints, extra wires run for horns and lights, and a battery box crammed with connections. A hacked loom sits behind most charging and lighting faults on these bikes. Try the self-start with the headlight on: a slow crank is often just the battery, but a bike that only ever starts on the kick has usually been living with a charging fault.

Load the battery on an electric bike

Note the pack voltage shown on the display when parked and fully charged, then ride up a slope and watch it again. A pack that drops sharply under load and recovers once you stop is near the end of its life, and on an affordable e-bike the replacement pack is the single biggest cost of ownership. Confirm the original charger and both keys are included.

Ravi bikes, scooters & e-bikes — questions

Is a used Ravi Piaggio Storm 125 harder to maintain than a local 125?

In one specific way, yes. The Storm's engine is not a copy of the pattern the 125-class parts market serves, so consumables come through Ravi's dealers or the used-parts trade rather than off a counter. The servicing itself is ordinary work for any mechanic — it is the parts, not the labour, that take the time.

What is worth checking on a used Storm 125?

Ride it into fifth under load, since the four-speed 125s most buyers know have no top gear to test and gearbox parts here are not pattern items. Then look for nearest-fit substitutes such as a generic silencer or air-filter housing, and feel the steering head for a notch at straight-ahead, which the weight of a large full tank encourages.
