Peel-test the headboard facing

Pull each drawer fully out

Pull the bed away from the wall

Kneel on the middle of the base

Slats that bow sharply or jump out of their end caps, and a wide frame with no centre leg reaching the floor, both mean the base will hollow under a mattress and take the mattress down with it.
Lift the hydraulic storage base
On a storage bed, raise the base with one hand and let go halfway. It should hold where you leave it and come down slowly. A base that drops, or that has to be propped, has spent gas struts, and struts are replaced as a matched pair rather than singly.
Check the dressing mirror edges
View the mirror at a shallow angle against a light and follow its edges for black creep in the silvering, which spreads and cannot be reversed. Press the glass gently in its frame as well, because a mirror loose in its rebate rarely survives being carried down stairs.
Measure the inside rail width
Measure rail to rail and head to foot rather than trusting the words king or queen, because locally made frames vary. A frame whose internal size does not match a standard mattress narrows the number of people who can actually use it.
