Used IKEA beds & bedroom furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used IKEA beds & bedroom furniture worth buying?

IKEA beds reach Islamabad with households moving in or out, not through any shop here. The detail that catches people out is size, because IKEA frames are built to European metric mattress sizes while mattresses here are sold in inches. Measure the inside of the frame first and treat everything else about the bed as secondary.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

With no IKEA store or spares counter in Pakistan, a missing bolt, cam or leg is either substituted with generic hardware or fabricated. The published manual and article number are what make that practical, since a carpenter can cut slats or a mid-beam to the documented dimensions.

Checking a used IKEA beds & bedroom furniture

These are specific to IKEA. The general beds & bedroom furniture checks apply too and are on the beds & bedroom furniture page.

Measure the internal frame

IKEA sizes are metric, such as 140 by 200 centimetres, while mattresses sold here are quoted in inches. Measure inside the rails and convert before assuming an existing mattress will drop in.

Check the slat base

The slatted base is a separate product from the frame, so a used bed may arrive without one. Confirm the slats and their end caps are present, and flex a few to see whether any have taken a permanent bow.

Find the mid-beam and feet

Double frames rely on a centre support beam with one or two legs. It is the part most often left behind in a move, and without it the base sags in the middle from the first night.

Read the article number

The label under the rail carries the model name and article number. With it, the published assembly manual identifies every part; without it, matching a fitting means measuring by hand.

What IKEA beds & bedroom furniture are worth

  • Metric sizing is the deciding factor, since an IKEA frame that suits a mattress size sold here is worth more than an identical frame needing a mattress made to order.
  • The slat base and mid-beam are separate parts that go missing in a move, and with no local supply their absence pulls the grade down further than surface damage does.
  • Published manuals and article numbers make an IKEA bed easy to identify and easy for a carpenter to copy a part for, which supports the value of an otherwise unsupported import.

General beds & bedroom furniture checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the beds & bedroom furniture page covers them in full.

Rock the assembled frame

Stand at one corner of a made-up bed and push it side to side; a sound frame moves as one piece without a click. Play where the side rail bolts into the headboard usually means the fixing has torn out of the panel, which is a carpentry repair on solid wood and often terminal on particle board.

Pull the bed away from the wall

A bed stands undisturbed against a wall for years, so look at the back of the headboard, the two feet nearest the wall, and the underside of the base. Mud tracks running up from the skirting, pinholes, or a powdery line on the floor where the feet stand are deemak, and it will already be working its way towards the wardrobe.

Kneel on the middle of the base

Put your weight on the centre of the slatted base and watch what the slats do. They should stay seated with only slight give. Slats that bow sharply or jump out of their end caps, and a wide frame with no centre leg reaching the floor, both mean the base will hollow under a mattress and take the mattress down with it.

Lift the hydraulic storage base

On a storage bed, raise the base with one hand and let go halfway. It should hold where you leave it and come down slowly. A base that drops, or that has to be propped, has spent gas struts, and struts are replaced as a matched pair rather than singly.

Check the dressing mirror edges

View the mirror at a shallow angle against a light and follow its edges for black creep in the silvering, which spreads and cannot be reversed. Press the glass gently in its frame as well, because a mirror loose in its rebate rarely survives being carried down stairs.

Measure the inside rail width

Measure rail to rail and head to foot rather than trusting the words king or queen, because locally made frames vary. A frame whose internal size does not match a standard mattress narrows the number of people who can actually use it.

IKEA beds & bedroom furniture — questions

Does an IKEA bed fit a Pakistani mattress?

Not automatically. IKEA frames are built to metric European sizes such as 140 by 200 centimetres, while mattresses here are sold in inches. Measure inside the rails and convert before buying either the bed or the mattress. Where the sizes are close but not equal, a mattress made to order is usually the practical fix.

What is usually missing from a second-hand IKEA bed?

The slatted base and the centre support beam, because both are separate parts that get left behind in a move. Without that beam a double frame sags from the first night. Check for them before agreeing, and note the article number from the label so the published manual can confirm what the model should include.
