Press the tufted panel
Push between the buttons on a padded or tufted headboard. Where the padding has flattened and the buttons stand proud, the panel has to be re-covered whole, and because ChenOne's cloth is sold through its own stores rather than by the metre, a re-cover changes the colour of the entire headboard.
Look at the mirror bevel
Run a finger around the dressing-table mirror's edge. A chamfered, bevelled edge means a replacement has to be cut and bevelled to order by a glazier working from the frame, and the clips or adhesive behind it usually have to be opened up to seat the new glass.
Work the drawers, mirror fitted
A heavy mirror sitting on a light carcass racks it over time. Open and close each dressing-table drawer with the mirror in place: drawers that rub or stick with it on and run freely with it off mean the carcass has gone out of square under the weight.
Check the handle plating
Decorative antique-brass and chrome handles wear through at the grip point, and worn plating cannot be re-plated locally to match the rest of the set. A replacement in the same finish is a showroom question and depends on that range still being stocked.

Rock the assembled frame
Stand at one corner of a made-up bed and push it side to side; a sound frame moves as one piece without a click. Play where the side rail bolts into the headboard usually means the fixing has torn out of the panel, which is a carpentry repair on solid wood and often terminal on particle board.
Pull the bed away from the wall
A bed stands undisturbed against a wall for years, so look at the back of the headboard, the two feet nearest the wall, and the underside of the base. Mud tracks running up from the skirting, pinholes, or a powdery line on the floor where the feet stand are deemak, and it will already be working its way towards the wardrobe.
Kneel on the middle of the base
Put your weight on the centre of the slatted base and watch what the slats do. They should stay seated with only slight give. Slats that bow sharply or jump out of their end caps, and a wide frame with no centre leg reaching the floor, both mean the base will hollow under a mattress and take the mattress down with it.
Lift the hydraulic storage base
On a storage bed, raise the base with one hand and let go halfway. It should hold where you leave it and come down slowly. A base that drops, or that has to be propped, has spent gas struts, and struts are replaced as a matched pair rather than singly.
Check the dressing mirror edges
View the mirror at a shallow angle against a light and follow its edges for black creep in the silvering, which spreads and cannot be reversed. Press the glass gently in its frame as well, because a mirror loose in its rebate rarely survives being carried down stairs.
Measure the inside rail width
Measure rail to rail and head to foot rather than trusting the words king or queen, because locally made frames vary. A frame whose internal size does not match a standard mattress narrows the number of people who can actually use it.
