Used Hikvision cctv & security systems in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Hikvision cctv & security system worth buying?

Hikvision has the deepest dealer and installer network of any CCTV brand in the twin cities, so cameras, recorders and matched cabling are all easy to source and to add to later. The two things that decide whether a used unit is usable are the admin password and the Hik-Connect account it is still attached to, and neither is trivial to undo afterwards.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

Hikvision is imported but backed by the widest dealer network of any CCTV brand in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, so brackets, power supplies, connectors and matching cameras are readily available. Faulty cameras are normally replaced rather than repaired, while recorders are often kept going by swapping the disk or power supply.

Checking a used Hikvision cctv & security system

These are specific to Hikvision. The general cctv & security systems checks apply too and are on the cctv & security systems page.

Get the admin password

Recovering a lost Hikvision admin password means exporting a challenge file and going through an authorised reset route tied to the serial. Do not accept a device without working credentials on the assumption you can reset it yourself.

Remove it from Hik-Connect

A camera or recorder still registered to the seller's Hik-Connect account cannot be added to yours. Ask them to delete the device from their account in front of you; the verification code on the label is needed afterwards.

Check the firmware region

Units built for the Chinese market show region warnings and cannot be upgraded with international firmware in the normal way. Read the model and firmware version from the device menu rather than from the box.

Test the IR switching

Cover the light sensor and listen for the infrared cut filter clicking over. A filter stuck in day mode gives a purple night image and is a mechanical fault inside the camera.

Check the recorder's disk

Surveillance drives run continuously for years. Read the disk's health status in the recorder's menu and treat a drive reporting reallocated sectors as a consumable that is nearly used up.

What Hikvision cctv & security systems are worth

  • The size of the local installed base keeps demand high, because buyers can extend an existing Hikvision system rather than replace it.
  • A device with unknown admin credentials is worth markedly less, since recovery runs through the manufacturer's authorised process rather than a button press.
  • International-firmware units are worth more here than Chinese-market ones, because the update and app path is unobstructed.
  • Recorders are valued together with their drive, as a healthy surveillance-rated disk is a meaningful part of the system's cost.

General cctv & security systems checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the cctv & security systems page covers them in full.

Watch the night picture

Cup a hand over the lens or view the feed in a darkened room. You should hear a faint click as the infrared cut filter moves and see the picture turn to clean monochrome; LEDs that never light, or a milky washed-out grey image, mean the IR array or the filter has failed and night footage will be useless.

Scroll back through playback

Ask to play back yesterday's recording from the recorder's own menu rather than only looking at live view. Smooth playback across several channels means the disk and the board are working; freezing, missing hours, or a recorder that shows live video but nothing recorded usually means the surveillance drive is failing.

Inspect the camera pigtail

Look at the short cable tail at the back of each camera where the connectors sit. Clean, dry connectors with the rubber boot intact are what you want; taped joints, green corrosion on BNC or RJ45 pins, or a tail chewed by rodents cause intermittent dropouts that get blamed on the camera itself.

Look inside the dome

Hold the camera up to the light and look through the dome cover for droplets, fogging, or a tide mark on the inside. Moisture inside the housing means the gasket has failed, and the board behind it will already be corroding even if today's picture still looks acceptable.

Log in as admin

Have the seller enter the recorder's admin password in front of you and open the settings menu. If they cannot, treat the unit as scrap: Hikvision and Dahua recorders need a reset code generated from the serial number and the device date, and older models may no longer be supported for that at all.

Match cameras to recorder

Establish whether the cameras are analogue HD (AHD, TVI or CVI) or IP, and whether the recorder has free channels of that same type. Cameras bought without a matching recorder, or IP cameras destined for an analogue DVR, cannot be connected at all without replacing the recorder.

Hikvision cctv & security systems — questions

What happens if a used Hikvision NVR has an unknown admin password?

You cannot simply reset it with a button. Hikvision's recovery process needs the device serial and an exported challenge file put through an authorised reset route, which takes time and a cooperative dealer. Treat working credentials as part of the deal and have the seller log in and create your own admin account before you take the unit away.

Can I mix used Hikvision cameras with a different brand of recorder?

Often yes on the IP side, because most Hikvision IP cameras speak ONVIF and will stream into a third-party recorder, although brand-specific analytics may not carry over. On the analogue side Hikvision uses the HD-TVI standard, so the recorder must support it. Most modern hybrid recorders handle several standards, but check the specification first.
