Used Sonex kitchenware & crockery in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Sonex kitchenware & crockery worth buying?

Sonex is made in Gujranwala, and that is the whole argument for buying it used: lids, handles and matching pieces are still sold in local markets, so a missing lid is not fatal. Heavy-gauge stainless degchis, hot pots and water coolers outlive their owners. Non-stick pieces are the exception — the coating is the wear part and it cannot be recoated economically.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Because Sonex is manufactured locally, lids, knobs, handles and gaskets are broadly available in Rawalpindi and Islamabad hardware markets, and generic parts often fit. That keeps a damaged but sound piece economic to repair.

Checking a used Sonex kitchenware & crockery

These are specific to Sonex. The general kitchenware & crockery checks apply too and are on the kitchenware & crockery page.

Check the sandwich base

On steel pans Sonex bonds a heavier disc to the base. Set the pan on a flat surface and look for rocking or a lifted edge — a separated or warped base spreads heat unevenly and cannot be re-bonded.

Pull on the handle rivets

Handles are riveted, not welded. Loose rivets or a cracked bakelite handle are the most common Sonex fault, and both are repairable with parts from local hardware markets.

Look inside insulated hot pots

Sonex casseroles rely on a foam-insulated inner shell. A dented or cracked inner liner kills heat retention, and the outer body can look perfect while it is gone.

Scratch-test non-stick

Coating that shows bare metal streaks or flaking has reached the end. Grade it as For Parts / Repair rather than Good Used — recoating is not economic here.

What Sonex kitchenware & crockery are worth

  • Stainless pieces hold value well relative to the category because the material does not degrade and local spares keep an incomplete item usable.
  • Non-stick lines lose value faster than the category average, since the coating is consumable and there is no local recoating trade worth using.
  • Complete hot pot and cooler sets with matching lids move better, as lids are the piece that goes missing and colours are not always matched year to year.

General kitchenware & crockery checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the kitchenware & crockery page covers them in full.

Count settings and serving pieces

Lay a dinner service out and check it against the number of place settings it was sold as, then count the serving pieces separately: lidded bowls, the gravy jug, the large platter. A set that still has its plates but none of those sells as loose plates rather than as a service.

Run a fingernail over rims

Chips and hairline cracks catch the nail before the eye finds them. Hold plates against a window as well: a fine network of cracks in the glaze, called crazing, stains permanently and keeps spreading, so a crazed piece is decorative rather than daily crockery.

Stand pans on flat surface

Press each edge of the base in turn. A pan that rocks has a warped bottom and will never sit properly on a hotplate or a modern hob. Look inside stainless steel for small pits, which come from salt left standing in the pan and will not polish out.

Look at the non-stick centre

Deep scratches down to the metal, blistering, or coating lifting at the edge mean the pan has reached the end of its life, since recoating is not practical here. A coating that is intact but dulled still cooks properly and simply grades lower.

Work the pressure cooker valves

Press the safety valve and lift the vent weight; both must move freely. The gasket should still be soft and spring back when squeezed, not hard and flattened. A valve replaced with a bolt, or a lid whose lugs are distorted, is not something to cook with.

Read the backstamp underneath

The maker's mark and pattern name on the base decide whether the set can be topped up later. Unmarked or long-discontinued patterns cannot be matched, and a gold or metallic rim, however smart it looks, rules the piece out of the microwave.

Sonex kitchenware & crockery — questions

Are used Sonex steel utensils a sensible buy?

Yes for the stainless range. Heavy steel degchis, stock pots, trays and coolers have no consumable parts, so age tells you little and condition tells you everything. Check the base for warping and the handles for loose rivets. Non-stick Sonex is a different question — buy that only if the coating is genuinely unmarked.

Can a Sonex hot pot be repaired if it stops holding heat?

Usually not economically. Heat loss comes from a dented or cracked inner liner or crushed insulation inside the shell, and the body is sealed. Lids, gaskets and handles are replaceable from local markets, so those faults are worth fixing; a failed liner means the piece is only worth what its lid and fittings are worth.
