Used Yanmar industrial & commercial machinery in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Yanmar industrial & commercial machinery worth buying?
Yanmar reaches Pakistan as used Japanese stock, and it arrives in three quite different shapes: hopper-cooled horizontal singles of the TF and NF type on tube wells and threshers, small air-cooled L-series units on pumps and welders, and multi-cylinder TNV engines inside imported gensets and compact machines. The singles and the multi-cylinder units share a badge and almost nothing else, so establishing the family comes before everything.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
Yanmar is not built in Pakistan, so genuine injection components, heads and gaskets come through importers and the used-parts trade in the diesel markets. What keeps the singles alive is the volume of pattern parts made for the same design — they fit and they work, but each one fitted moves the engine further from original.
Checking a used Yanmar industrial & commercial machinery
These are specific to Yanmar. The general industrial & commercial machinery checks apply too and are on the industrial & commercial machinery page.
Look inside the water hopper
TF and NF singles are commonly cooled by evaporation from an open hopper you can look straight down into, rather than a sealed circuit. Thick scale, loose rust flakes or a burnt waterline mean it has been run dry, and a cracked head or blown head gasket is the usual consequence.
Identify the engine family
A hopper-cooled TF single, an air-cooled L-series and a multi-cylinder TNV are three different machines behind one badge. Village mechanics know the singles thoroughly, while TNV parts and knowledge sit with genset traders instead, so the family decides who can actually help you later.
Check the electric-start hardware
Many TF singles were sold in both hand-start and electric-start builds, the electric ones usually carrying an E in the model designation. If the plate says E, the starter, dynamo and wiring should still be there and working, not abandoned in favour of the crank handle.
Look for salt corrosion
A good share of imported Yanmars are marine take-outs. Pitting under the paint, seized or wasted fasteners and green staining around water passages say it worked near salt water, which matters most where the cooling passages and the head studs run.
What Yanmar industrial & commercial machinery are worth
- The TF design has been copied widely, which helps a verified original as much as it confuses the market: pattern consumables fit it, so a genuine engine can be kept running cheaply and still be valued as genuine.
- An engine whose stamped serial pad has been painted over, ground off or replaced is valued as an unbranded diesel, because nothing else on it settles what it is.
- Hopper-cooled singles hold their value wherever tube wells and threshers still use them, so the condition of the head and hopper moves an assessment further than any claim about hours.
- Multi-cylinder TNV units depend on brand-specific injection parts that come through importers, so their value carries the wait that any repair implies.

General industrial & commercial machinery checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the industrial & commercial machinery page covers them in full.
Put a real load on it
An unloaded machine tells you little. On an air compressor, time it up to cut-out pressure, then stop it and watch the gauge: a receiver that bleeds down within minutes has leaking valves, unions or a worn non-return valve. On a driven machine, load the spindle or the feed and listen for the motor bogging down.
Check the floor, not the machine
Machines get wiped down before a viewing; the floor underneath does not. A dark patch under the sump, gearbox or hydraulic ram records a leak that has been running a long time. Fresh paint on a gearbox casing or a cylinder head usually hides the trace of that leak rather than a restoration.
Compare the hour meter with the wear
Hour meters are the odometer of this category and are swapped just as freely. Read it, then look at the controls: handwheel knurling worn smooth, polished slideways, pedals rubbed bare. Low hours on a machine with heavily worn controls means the meter has been changed or left disconnected, and the reading is worth nothing.
Wind the handwheels and feel the backlash
On a lathe or milling machine, turn each handwheel back and forth. The free movement before the slide actually travels is backlash in the leadscrew and nut, and a large amount means the machine can no longer hold a size. Check the bedways for scoring and for a worn dip near the chuck, which is where the work has been done.
Read the plate for supply and starter
The rating plate gives the kilowatts, the phase and the full-load current, which decides whether a site can run the machine at all. Ask whether the starter, contactors and overload relay are included, since a motor above a few kilowatts needs proper starting gear and a machine arriving without its panel is not ready to work.
Look inside the pressure vessel's drain
Open the drain valve at the bottom of an air receiver. Water should come out, because a tank drained regularly has some. A drain left shut for years means the vessel has been standing in its own condensate and corroding from the inside, which cannot be seen from outside and cannot be repaired.
