Used Millat industrial & commercial machinery in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Millat industrial & commercial machinery worth buying?

Millat builds Massey Ferguson tractors in Pakistan under licence, and tractor workshops in the Potohar belt are set up for the MF pattern. The practical consequence is that engine, clutch and hydraulic parts are counter stock rather than an order. Which MF you are buying still matters, though: the three-cylinder 240 and the four-cylinder 385 are different machines with different bills.

Assembled locally under licence

An established local service network means genuine parts are obtainable and repairs are generally worth doing.

Millat builds to the MF pattern in Pakistan, so AD3.152 liner and piston sets, injectors, clutch plates, lift rams and king pins are ordinary stock in tractor-parts markets across both cities and the surrounding districts, and diesel pump shops rebuild the injection pumps locally. The two exceptions worth knowing are the four-wheel-drive front axle on a 385, and anything under the lift cover, where the part is cheap but draining and opening the rear housing is not.

Checking a used Millat industrial & commercial machinery

These are specific to Millat. The general industrial & commercial machinery checks apply too and are on the industrial & commercial machinery page.

Establish which MF model

The 240 is the three-cylinder AD3.152 machine; the 375 and 385 are four-cylinder, heavier, and the 385 is also sold in four-wheel drive. Steering, front axle and clutch parts differ across them, so the model decides both the checks and the bill.

Raise the lift and wait

On an MF the hydraulic pump sits inside the rear housing under the lift cover, driven off the PTO shaft. A lift that sinks is therefore a drain-and-lift-the-cover job rather than an external pump swap, so test it with a real implement hooked on, not by watching empty arms move.

Half-press for the PTO

Find out whether it has the single or the two-stage clutch: with the two-stage, pressing the pedal partway stops the drive while the PTO keeps turning. Which one is fitted changes the plate set you will be buying and how the tractor behaves with a thresher or a loaded trolley.

Check the shared oil

The lift, the transmission and the rear axle draw on the same oil on an MF. Pull the level plug: milky oil means water has been getting in, and an unexplained low level means it is going somewhere, usually past the lift rams or a final-drive seal.

Engage the four-wheel drive

On a 385 in four-wheel drive, drive it with the front axle engaged and listen at the propshaft and front hubs. Front-drive axle parts are the thin end of MF supply here, unlike the rear end, where everything is ordinary stock.

What Millat industrial & commercial machinery are worth

  • Because MF parts are made here, almost nothing on a Millat is a write-off, so these tractors stay in work long after their cosmetic condition has gone and value follows working life rather than looks.
  • Hydraulics and clutch condition move the assessment more than the hour reading does, since they decide whether it can pull an implement tomorrow.
  • A 385 in four-wheel drive suits loader and trolley work and is wanted for it, but its front axle is the one area where MF supply thins out — the two pull against each other.
  • A tractor that cannot be transferred on its file is hard for the next owner to move on, and it is valued with that in mind.

General industrial & commercial machinery checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the industrial & commercial machinery page covers them in full.

Put a real load on it

An unloaded machine tells you little. On an air compressor, time it up to cut-out pressure, then stop it and watch the gauge: a receiver that bleeds down within minutes has leaking valves, unions or a worn non-return valve. On a driven machine, load the spindle or the feed and listen for the motor bogging down.

Check the floor, not the machine

Machines get wiped down before a viewing; the floor underneath does not. A dark patch under the sump, gearbox or hydraulic ram records a leak that has been running a long time. Fresh paint on a gearbox casing or a cylinder head usually hides the trace of that leak rather than a restoration.

Compare the hour meter with the wear

Hour meters are the odometer of this category and are swapped just as freely. Read it, then look at the controls: handwheel knurling worn smooth, polished slideways, pedals rubbed bare. Low hours on a machine with heavily worn controls means the meter has been changed or left disconnected, and the reading is worth nothing.

Wind the handwheels and feel the backlash

On a lathe or milling machine, turn each handwheel back and forth. The free movement before the slide actually travels is backlash in the leadscrew and nut, and a large amount means the machine can no longer hold a size. Check the bedways for scoring and for a worn dip near the chuck, which is where the work has been done.

Read the plate for supply and starter

The rating plate gives the kilowatts, the phase and the full-load current, which decides whether a site can run the machine at all. Ask whether the starter, contactors and overload relay are included, since a motor above a few kilowatts needs proper starting gear and a machine arriving without its panel is not ready to work.

Look inside the pressure vessel's drain

Open the drain valve at the bottom of an air receiver. Water should come out, because a tank drained regularly has some. A drain left shut for years means the vessel has been standing in its own condensate and corroding from the inside, which cannot be seen from outside and cannot be repaired.

Millat industrial & commercial machinery — questions

Which used Millat should I buy, the 240 or the 385?

It depends on the work. The 240 is the three-cylinder machine — lighter, simpler and the most straightforward of the range to keep running, which suits trolley and light field work. The 375 and 385 are four-cylinder and pull heavier implements, and the 385 also comes in four-wheel drive for loader work, at the cost of a front axle whose parts are harder to find than the rest of the tractor.

What is the most expensive thing to go wrong on a used Millat?

The hydraulics, because of where the pump lives. On an MF it sits inside the rear housing under the lift cover, driven off the PTO shaft, so replacing it means draining the oil and lifting the cover — the part is ordinary, the labour is not. Test the lift with a real implement, raise it and leave it up: a lift that sinks is telling you something.
