Used Kirloskar industrial & commercial machinery in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Kirloskar industrial & commercial machinery worth buying?
Kirloskar is two businesses under one name: Kirloskar Brothers builds the pumps, Kirloskar Oil Engines the diesels and gensets. Both are Indian-built, and because direct trade with India has been restricted, what circulates in Pakistan is long-settled stock or units routed through third countries rather than anything a distributor can reorder. That single fact shapes every repair decision on one.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
Bearings, mechanical seals, gland packing and couplings for a Kirloskar come from any pump or bearing shop in the Rawalpindi machinery markets. Impellers, casings, monoblock shafts and engine-specific parts have no distributor channel here at all, so they are found in the used trade or brought in by traders, and that search is the real cost of the repair.
Checking a used Kirloskar industrial & commercial machinery
These are specific to Kirloskar. The general industrial & commercial machinery checks apply too and are on the industrial & commercial machinery page.
KBL or KOEL
Kirloskar Brothers builds the pumps and Kirloskar Oil Engines the diesels and gensets, and the plate names one or the other. It decides which trade you will be chasing parts through, and the two barely overlap.
Monoblock or coupled set
On a KDS-type monoblock the pump and motor share one shaft inside a single casing, so a burnt winding is not simply a motor swap. A coupled pump with its own motor and baseplate can be repaired a piece at a time; the monoblock cannot.
Check the air-cooled tinwork
The Kirloskar single-cylinder diesel is air-cooled, so the fan shrouding and cylinder fins do the work a radiator does elsewhere. Missing tinwork, or fins packed solid with chaff and oil mist, means it has been running hot and the head is where that shows up.
Ask when it arrived
Genuine Kirloskar equipment here is generally long-settled stock or a third-country import, not something bought new from a local agent. A seller who can say when and how it came in is also telling you where its spares will have to be found.
What Kirloskar industrial & commercial machinery are worth
- There is no local distributor route for Indian-branded equipment, so model-specific parts come out of the used trade, and anything needing one is valued on that search rather than on the labour involved.
- A monoblock is valued on the condition of its winding more than its hydraulics, because the shared shaft means a serious motor failure takes the pump with it.
- A genuine unit with a readable plate can be matched to a published duty, so a buyer knows what it should deliver; a Kirloskar-type copy cannot be, and is valued only on what it is seen doing.
- Bearings, seals and gland packing are ordinary market items, so routine servicing never holds a Kirloskar back — it is the cast and model-specific parts that decide what one is worth.

General industrial & commercial machinery checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the industrial & commercial machinery page covers them in full.
Put a real load on it
An unloaded machine tells you little. On an air compressor, time it up to cut-out pressure, then stop it and watch the gauge: a receiver that bleeds down within minutes has leaking valves, unions or a worn non-return valve. On a driven machine, load the spindle or the feed and listen for the motor bogging down.
Check the floor, not the machine
Machines get wiped down before a viewing; the floor underneath does not. A dark patch under the sump, gearbox or hydraulic ram records a leak that has been running a long time. Fresh paint on a gearbox casing or a cylinder head usually hides the trace of that leak rather than a restoration.
Compare the hour meter with the wear
Hour meters are the odometer of this category and are swapped just as freely. Read it, then look at the controls: handwheel knurling worn smooth, polished slideways, pedals rubbed bare. Low hours on a machine with heavily worn controls means the meter has been changed or left disconnected, and the reading is worth nothing.
Wind the handwheels and feel the backlash
On a lathe or milling machine, turn each handwheel back and forth. The free movement before the slide actually travels is backlash in the leadscrew and nut, and a large amount means the machine can no longer hold a size. Check the bedways for scoring and for a worn dip near the chuck, which is where the work has been done.
Read the plate for supply and starter
The rating plate gives the kilowatts, the phase and the full-load current, which decides whether a site can run the machine at all. Ask whether the starter, contactors and overload relay are included, since a motor above a few kilowatts needs proper starting gear and a machine arriving without its panel is not ready to work.
Look inside the pressure vessel's drain
Open the drain valve at the bottom of an air receiver. Water should come out, because a tank drained regularly has some. A drain left shut for years means the vessel has been standing in its own condensate and corroding from the inside, which cannot be seen from outside and cannot be repaired.
