Used PEL air conditioners in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used PEL air conditioner worth buying?
PEL is one of the country's oldest electrical manufacturers and builds its air conditioners in Lahore, selling them through the same dealer chain that carries its refrigerators and washing machines. That matters second-hand in one specific way: the parts question for the particular unit in front of you can be settled before money changes hands, by reading the model string off the outdoor plate and ringing a PEL dealer with it.
Made or assembled in Pakistan
Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.
PEL's spares move through the same dealer chain that carries its refrigerators and washing machines, and both cities are covered, so a dealer can usually say on the phone whether a given model's blower, capacitor or board is on the shelf or has to come from Lahore. Inverter electronics are the one line worth asking about in advance.

Ask if it is InverterOn
PEL sells its inverter splits under the InverterOn name, marked on the indoor fascia and carried in the model string. Check both, because a fascia can be replaced, and a claimed inverter that the string does not confirm should be treated as fixed-speed.
Ring a PEL dealer first
PEL's dealers handle its refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners from one counter. Read the model string off the outdoor plate and ring one before you commit: they can say whether the blower, capacitor or board for that model sits on a shelf or has to come from Lahore.
Ask for the service booklet
PEL units are sold with a warranty and service booklet that lists the brand's authorised service points city by city. Even after the warranty has run out it is worth having, because it names who in Islamabad or Rawalpindi will take the job rather than leaving you to find that out later.
What PEL air conditioners are worth
- A used PEL is worth what its model string is worth: one call to a dealer settles whether the blower and board for that model are stocked or ordered, and that answer moves an offer more than the machine's age does.
- InverterOn is carried in the model string as well as on the fascia, so it survives a cover swap — a PEL claimed as an inverter that the string does not confirm gets priced as fixed-speed.
- An owner who can name the dealer that supplied and serviced the unit shortens every later parts enquiry, since PEL's appliances and their spares move through the same counters, and that shows in how quickly a used PEL places.

General air conditioners checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the air conditioners page covers them in full.
Measure the temperature split
Run the unit for fifteen minutes, then compare the air being drawn into the indoor grille with the air leaving the vent. A healthy split is obvious to the hand and clear on a thermometer. A narrow gap after a full cycle usually points at low refrigerant or a tired compressor, and both are expensive.
Watch the outdoor unit start
Stand at the outdoor unit as the compressor kicks in. It should start within a couple of minutes and settle into a steady hum. Starting and stopping every few minutes, or a hard mechanical knock at start-up, is a compressor or capacitor symptom rather than a quirk of the model.
Look for oil at joints
Refrigerant carries compressor oil, so a leak leaves a dark, oily film at the flare nuts and along the copper. A unit that cools today with oily joints will need gas again, and a refill without a leak repair does not hold for long.
Confirm inverter behaviour
An inverter compressor should slow down once the room reaches the set temperature instead of switching off outright. If the outdoor unit only ever runs flat out and then stops dead, either the unit is not the inverter model it is described as, or its control board has stopped modulating.
Check the drain runs clear
After the unit has been running a while, water should leave the drain pipe steadily and nowhere else. No water at all suggests a blocked line, and damp on the wall below the indoor unit means the condensate has found another route out, which shows up later as staining and mould.
Test the remote and supply
Cycle cooling, fan speed, swing and temperature, and confirm the unit obeys each command rather than merely lighting up the display. A missing remote is common and replaceable; a unit that responds to only some commands points at the control board. Ask what supply it was run on as well, since a split wants its own circuit and an isolator, and a stabiliser with scorched terminals says the voltage it lived with was rough.
