Used Orient air conditioners in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Orient air conditioner worth buying?

Orient builds its air conditioners in Pakistan and puts its inverter splits under the Ultron name, which is where judging a used one has to start. Ultron is a line rather than a model, and it has run across more than one generation, so the badge on the fascia tells you the family and nothing else. The full string and build date on the outdoor plate tell you the rest.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Universal items — capacitors, contactors, filters, remotes — are no trouble for an Orient anywhere in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Anything line-specific is ordered against the complete Ultron string and the build date, which is why the plate matters more on this brand than the badge does.

Checking a used Orient air conditioner

These are specific to Orient. The general air conditioners checks apply too and are on the air conditioners page.

Ultron is not a model

Ultron is Orient's line name, not a model number, and it has covered more than one generation of machine. Take the complete string off the outdoor rating plate, because that is the only form a parts dealer can work from.

No Ultron, assume fixed-speed

Orient carries its inverter splits under the Ultron name, so an Orient with no Ultron marking on the fascia or in the model string is most likely a fixed-speed machine. Have the rating plate confirm it before you pay for an inverter.

Read the build date

Orient keeps the Ultron name and a similar fascia across generations, so age is not visible from the front of the machine. The manufacturing date on the outdoor rating plate settles it, and it is the figure worth quoting alongside the string when you ask about parts.

What Orient air conditioners are worth

  • An Orient is priced off its string rather than its badge, because the Ultron name has run across generations and nobody can quote a repair from a family name.
  • An Orient with an unreadable outdoor plate is hard to place at all, since the fascia identifies the line but not the generation or the year, and both are needed before a part can be ordered.
  • A clean Orient whose plate answers both questions — which line, which year — moves quickly, because a buyer does not need a technician standing there to know what he is looking at.

General air conditioners checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the air conditioners page covers them in full.

Measure the temperature split

Run the unit for fifteen minutes, then compare the air being drawn into the indoor grille with the air leaving the vent. A healthy split is obvious to the hand and clear on a thermometer. A narrow gap after a full cycle usually points at low refrigerant or a tired compressor, and both are expensive.

Watch the outdoor unit start

Stand at the outdoor unit as the compressor kicks in. It should start within a couple of minutes and settle into a steady hum. Starting and stopping every few minutes, or a hard mechanical knock at start-up, is a compressor or capacitor symptom rather than a quirk of the model.

Look for oil at joints

Refrigerant carries compressor oil, so a leak leaves a dark, oily film at the flare nuts and along the copper. A unit that cools today with oily joints will need gas again, and a refill without a leak repair does not hold for long.

Confirm inverter behaviour

An inverter compressor should slow down once the room reaches the set temperature instead of switching off outright. If the outdoor unit only ever runs flat out and then stops dead, either the unit is not the inverter model it is described as, or its control board has stopped modulating.

Check the drain runs clear

After the unit has been running a while, water should leave the drain pipe steadily and nowhere else. No water at all suggests a blocked line, and damp on the wall below the indoor unit means the condensate has found another route out, which shows up later as staining and mould.

Test the remote and supply

Cycle cooling, fan speed, swing and temperature, and confirm the unit obeys each command rather than merely lighting up the display. A missing remote is common and replaceable; a unit that responds to only some commands points at the control board. Ask what supply it was run on as well, since a split wants its own circuit and an isolator, and a stabiliser with scorched terminals says the voltage it lived with was rough.

Orient air conditioners — questions

Is Orient a good brand to buy second-hand for an AC?

It is a reasonable buy when you can identify the exact machine. Orient builds locally, so common consumables are easy in both cities. The catch is naming: Ultron is a line that has covered several generations, so a fascia badge is not enough to order a board or a blower against. Take the full string and the build date off the outdoor plate before agreeing anything.

What does Ultron mean on an Orient air conditioner?

Ultron is Orient's line name for its inverter splits, not a model number. It has been used across more than one generation, so two machines badged Ultron can differ in boards, blowers and fascia parts. Read the complete model string and the manufacturing date from the outdoor rating plate; an Orient with no Ultron marking at all is most likely a fixed-speed unit.
