Used Haier sewing & laundry machines in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Haier sewing & laundry machine worth buying?

Haier's place in this category is its washing machines, made in Pakistan across both semi-automatic and fully automatic ranges. The designation does useful work when buying used: HWM marks the washing line and the figure that follows is the rated wash load in kilograms, so a plate reading HWM 80 is an eight-kilogram machine rather than a trim level. Size, not trim, is what the number tells you.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Haier manufactures washing machines in Pakistan, and the routine parts — inlet valves and filter screens, drain pumps, belts, timers, lid switches and door locks — are stocked by ordinary appliance shops in Islamabad and Rawalpindi as well as through the brand's own service route. Clutch and gearbox assemblies are ordered against the HWM code.

Checking a used Haier sewing & laundry machine

These are specific to Haier. The general sewing & laundry machines checks apply too and are on the sewing & laundry machines page.

Read the HWM designation

Haier's washing machines carry an HWM code on the rating plate, and the number after it gives the rated wash load in kilograms. Confirm it on the machine rather than from the seller's description, since capacity is what a buyer is actually choosing on.

Time the fill and drain

A slow fill is nearly always the inlet side: the small filter screen where the hose meets the machine silts up in this water, and the inlet valve is next in line. A long drain with the pump audibly running usually means the trap rather than a dead pump.

Run a spin-only cycle

On a top-load automatic, a machine that agitates well but will not spin points at the clutch and reduction gearbox under the tub rather than at the motor. That assembly is the costly part on this type, so establish it before anything else.

Check the lid switch

A top loader refuses to spin with a worn lid switch, which from outside looks exactly like a drive fault. Press the switch by hand with the lid raised and listen for the click before anyone condemns the gearbox.

What Haier sewing & laundry machines are worth

  • Buyers choose these by capacity, so the HWM figure on the plate carries more weight in the grade than cosmetic condition does.
  • Water-side faults — a silted inlet screen, a tired inlet valve, a blocked pump trap — are cheap counter parts, so a Haier that will not fill or drain properly is usually still worth repairing.
  • On a top-load automatic the clutch and gearbox assembly is the fault that moves the grade, because the cost sits in the assembly itself rather than in the labour to reach it.

General sewing & laundry machines checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the sewing & laundry machines page covers them in full.

Turn the balance wheel

With the machine unthreaded, turn the wheel by hand through several complete stitch cycles. It should move evenly under light resistance; a catch at the same point every rotation suggests a bent needle bar or a hook out of time, while a gritty, dragging feel is usually dried oil and old lint in the race.

Stitch a sample on cloth

Sew a seam on two layers and look at both faces. Loops sitting on the underside are normally just a tension or bobbin-case setting; stitches that skip at random, or thread that keeps shredding, point at needle-to-hook timing or a scored race and need a mechanic.

Open the bobbin case

Lift the bobbin case out and inspect the race track for rust pitting and scoring. A clean, oiled race lets thread run smoothly, whereas a pitted one keeps breaking thread however the tension is set. Note that the bobbin case itself is matched to the model and is the part most often lost.

Watch the feed dogs work

Lower the presser foot on a scrap and sew slowly: the feed dogs should rise through the plate, carry the cloth an even distance each stitch and drop back. Cloth that slips, bunches or drifts to one side means flattened dog teeth or a presser foot sitting crooked. Run a fingernail around the needle hole in the plate as well, since a burr there shaves thread on every stitch.

Ride the foot pedal slowly

On an electric machine the pedal should give a smooth range from a crawl up to full speed rather than jumping straight to fast. A pedal that surges, sticks or grows hot, and a motor belt gone cracked or glazed, are replaceable parts but they tell you how long the machine has stood. On an industrial head, the clutch motor should bite gradually instead of snatching the wheel from stop to full.

Work the stitch selector

On a zigzag or multi-stitch machine, change width and length one step at a time and watch the needle actually move, because the cams and gears that drive it wear and a selector can turn freely while nothing changes. The reverse lever should back the seam along the same line rather than wandering off it. A plain straight-stitch head has far less to go wrong here, which is part of why those keep selling.

Haier sewing & laundry machines — questions

What does HWM mean on a Haier washing machine?

HWM is Haier's washing-machine designation, and the number that follows it is the rated wash load in kilograms — a plate reading HWM 80 is an eight-kilogram machine. The digits after that identify the variant. When buying used it is worth reading the plate rather than the advertisement, because capacity is what you are actually choosing, and drive parts are ordered against that whole code.

My used Haier automatic agitates but will not spin, what is it?

Start with the cheap possibility. On a top loader the lid switch has to be made for the machine to spin, and a worn one produces exactly this symptom; press it by hand with the lid raised and listen for the click. If the switch is sound, the next suspect is the clutch and reduction gearbox under the tub, which is the costly assembly on this type. A blocked pump trap can stop a spin too.
