Used Changhong Ruba refrigerators & freezers in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Changhong Ruba refrigerators & freezer worth buying?
Changhong Ruba fridges come from a Chinese-Pakistani joint venture with local assembly, and most of them reached households through the group's own retail and instalment channel rather than the general trade. Used stock sits at the budget end, so expect direct-cool cabinets as often as no-frost ones. The seal, the defrost drain and the floor under the crisper decide whether one is worth taking.
Assembled locally under licence
An established local service network means genuine parts are obtainable and repairs are generally worth doing.
Spares run through the joint venture's own service network, which reaches both cities but is thinner on the ground than Dawlance's, and the same centres handle its televisions and air conditioners. Refrigerant, relays and thermostats are ordinary trade items; gaskets, shelving and door fittings are ordered against the plate.

Checking a used Changhong Ruba refrigerators & freezer
These are specific to Changhong Ruba. The general refrigerators & freezers checks apply too and are on the refrigerators & freezers page.
Ask if instalments cleared
Most of these cabinets were sold on instalment through the group's own retail network, and the papers name the plan. Ask whether it was seen through to the end rather than only whether documents exist, because a unit on an open plan belongs to a transaction that is not finished.
Direct cool or no-frost
The range covers both formats. Look at the back wall of the freezer compartment: a vented grille with a fan behind it means no-frost, while bare cooling plates or visible tubing means direct cool, which has to be defrosted by hand and has no fan or damper to fail.
Check the defrost drain
On direct-cool cabinets, find the small drain hole at the back of the fresh-food compartment and the drip tray sitting over the compressor. Water pooling under the crisper means the hole is blocked, and left long enough it rusts the compartment floor, which is not a repair.
Look for service stickers
The joint venture services its televisions, air conditioners and fridges through the same centres, so a job sticker or slip on the back tells you the cabinet has been in and for what. That same network is where a gasket, shelf or door fitting will have to be ordered.
What Changhong Ruba refrigerators & freezers are worth
- Cabinets from the current generations are still supported by the joint venture's own network, so a gasket or shelf can be quoted against the plate — what costs the seller is the waiting, not the availability.
- On a direct-cool cabinet the seal and the compartment floor decide the price, because everything else in one is a commodity item, and a floor that has rusted under a blocked drain cannot be brought back.
- Surviving instalment paperwork lifts value, because it fixes the model and the purchase date; without it, a buyer with no feel for the range will assume the cabinet is older than it is.

General refrigerators & freezers checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the refrigerators & freezers page covers them in full.
Do the door seal test
Close the door on a banknote and pull it out. The seal should grip along every edge, corners included. Anywhere the note slides free, the gasket has hardened or the door has dropped, and the compressor will run far longer than it should to hold temperature.
Listen to the compressor cycle
A healthy compressor starts with a quiet click from the relay and settles into a steady low hum. Clicking every few minutes without the hum settling means the relay or overload protector is tripping, and a loud metallic rattle from the compressor body itself is a sealed-system fault.
Feel the back panel
Once the unit has run for a while, the condenser at the back or along the sides of the cabinet should be warm, because that is the heat being pushed out of the box. A fridge that runs constantly yet stays cool all over has usually lost its gas.
Read the frost pattern
On a no-frost model, heavy ice on the rear panel or a solid block over the fan means the defrost heater or its timer has failed. On a direct-cool model some frost is normal, but ice thick enough to trap the shelves points to a door left ajar or a failed seal.
Check liner and shelving
Run a hand around the inner plastic liner, especially the base and the corners near the crisper. Cracks there let moisture into the insulation and are hard to repair. Missing shelves, crisper covers and door bins are replaceable on current models and awkward to find on older ones.
Look for rust at base
Rust bubbling along the bottom edge or around the hinge usually means water sat there for a long time. Surface rust on the skin is cosmetic. Rust that has gone through near the compressor bay means the cabinet was kept somewhere damp and the structure is going.
