Is a used IKEA office furniture worth buying?

That decides the second-hand reality: no spares counter, no showroom to match a finish, and fittings specific to a numbered range. Many desks and shelves use hollow honeycomb board, which is light but tolerates only so many rebuilds.

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
There is no local spares route: fittings are matched by size in Rawalpindi's hardware markets, which works for standard cam bolts and dowels but not for range-specific brackets, drawer runners or glass shelves. Treat anything moulded and IKEA-specific as unobtainable and inspect it before buying.

Checking a used IKEA office furniture

Find the range name
Every piece carries a printed name and article number on a label, usually underneath or on a back panel. Without it a buyer cannot look up the assembly manual or check the part count.
Ask for the fittings bag
Cam locks, dowels and the hex key are specific in length to each range. Missing fittings are the most common reason a piece cannot be reassembled once it reaches Pakistan.
Tap for honeycomb board
Many desktops and shelves are hollow with a paper honeycomb core and sound empty when tapped. They hold screws only where a solid block is built in, so extra holes never grip.
Check the screw points
Look inside the fixing holes for crumbled particleboard, especially on a piece that has moved house. Once a cam hole is stripped the joint stays loose whatever you tighten.

Sit and watch the height
Set the chair high, sit down with your full weight and stay there a minute or two. A gas cylinder on its way out sinks slowly and steadily. Cylinders are a standard part matched by taper and stroke length, so it is a fix rather than a write-off, but it is the fault to expect on any used revolving chair.
Turn the chair upside down
Look at the five-star base where each arm meets the hub, especially on nylon bases, for hairline cracks that open under load. Then spin every castor; a seized one scores floors and is usually just hair wound round the axle.
Work the tilt and its lock
Rock back, lock the tilt upright, and wind the tension knob from one end of its travel to the other. A tilt that will not lock, or a knob that spins without changing anything, means the mechanism is finished, and on most chairs it is riveted to the seat pan.
Press the mesh back flat-handed
Push into the middle of a mesh back with an open palm. Sound mesh springs back evenly. A sagging pocket, or fraying where the fabric is clamped into the frame edge, means the mesh has stretched, and it cannot be re-tensioned on most models.
Check the desk underside
Look under the melamine top at the edge banding, around the cable grommet, and at the screw fixings into the leg frame and modesty panel. Swollen board along a screw line means the desk has already been taken apart and re-fixed once, and it will not hold a third time.
Load a filing cabinet drawer
Pull each drawer right out with weight in it. Runners should not sag or grate at full extension, only one drawer should open at a time if the anti-tilt interlock still works, and the keys should be with the cabinet, since replacements are cut from a code on the lock face.
