Used IKEA kids & nursery furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used IKEA kids & nursery furniture worth buying?
IKEA children's furniture arrives in Islamabad with families and diplomatic moves rather than through any local shop, and it arrives dismantled, because that is how it travels. Two things follow from that. The ranges split between solid wood and foil-wrapped board, and every piece has been through at least one extra assembly cycle by the time you see it.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
With no IKEA presence in Pakistan, genuine fittings and plastic boxes arrive only in someone's luggage. A carpenter can turn new dowels, plug and re-drill a solid-wood frame and make a slat or a ladder rail, which is exactly why the wooden ranges are the more practical used buy here; board with a failed cam housing has no equivalent fix.

Checking a used IKEA kids & nursery furniture
These are specific to IKEA. The general kids & nursery furniture checks apply too and are on the kids & nursery furniture page.
Tell wood from board
Several IKEA cot and bed ranges are solid wood — pine in most bed frames, beech in some cots — which any carpenter here can plane, plug and re-drill, while others are particle board under a printed foil wrap. Check a bottom edge near the floor, where the wrap lifts first and the core shows.
Check the dowel holes
These pieces reach Pakistan dismantled, and board loses its grip after a couple of assembly cycles. Look into the cam and dowel holes for crumbled material or dried glue, and ask how many houses the piece has moved through.
Check the reversible bed
The KURA bed is built to be turned over, low frame one way and high frame the other. If it has been flipped, look for the second set of holes and for plugged or enlarged ones at the ladder mounts, which is where a re-drilled frame goes soft.
Count the storage boxes
The TROFAST frame is a wooden shell whose sliding plastic boxes are cut to its runners. A frame sold without them is a shell you cannot use as intended, and locally bought tubs will not run on those mouldings.
What IKEA kids & nursery furniture are worth
- There is no local retail or spares route, so a proprietary cam housing or a missing plastic box can strand a piece that is otherwise sound.
- Solid-wood ranges repair like any timber in a Rawalpindi carpentry shop and therefore hold value better than the board ranges carrying the same name.
- Repeated dismantling is built into how these arrive here, and board joints never recover their grip, so assembly history matters more than surface condition.
- Unavailability locally sustains a specific buyer for these designs, which works in favour of complete examples.

General kids & nursery furniture checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the kids & nursery furniture page covers them in full.
Measure the gaps between slats
On a cot, a standard drink can should not pass between two slats, and the spacing should be even the whole way round. Uneven gaps, a missing slat or one that has been glued back in mean the cot has already failed once.
Push the assembled bunk sideways
With the bunk standing, push the upper frame along its length and then across it, and do the same at a cot's corner posts with the side rail at its highest setting. These are the joints that carry a sleeping child. Sway with a click, or a gap opening at a post, is loosened knock-down fittings; a bolt that spins without biting means the hole is stripped and the post will not hold.
Lift the mattress base
Take the mattress out and lift the base board off its brackets. Check the metal brackets and screws that carry the base at each height setting for bending or rust, and look at the underside of the board for swelling or a tide mark left by liquid sitting there.
Check the mattress underneath
Cot mattresses take the worst of it. Stains, a sour smell or a hollow in the middle mean it should be replaced rather than reused, and a mattress that has been soaked usually tells you the board beneath it has swollen too.
Check the bunk guard rail
The guard rail on an upper bunk should sit well clear of the mattress top and be bolted rather than slotted into place. Rock the ladder in its brackets as well: rungs that turn in their sockets and hook-on ladders with worn hooks are the parts that fail first.
Count the fittings
Flat-pack cots, bunks and study desks are held together by model-specific bolts and barrel nuts. Count them against the holes and ask for the Allen key and instruction sheet. On a discontinued model, missing fittings mean matching threads by hand at a hardware shop.
