Used Boss kids & nursery furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Boss kids & nursery furniture worth buying?

Boss is established here as a home-appliance manufacturer, and that is what almost every used Boss item on the local market turns out to be. Children's chairs, activity tables and study sets carrying the name are uncommon second-hand and worth verifying rather than assuming, so the first job with anything offered as a Boss is to establish what the moulding actually is.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Nothing on a moulded chair or table is a serviceable part — the seat is one piece, and detachable legs thread into bosses that are part of that same moulding. Local manufacture means a replacement is easy to find in general and hardware shops across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, which is not the same thing as a repair being possible.

Checking a used Boss kids & nursery furniture

These are specific to Boss. The general kids & nursery furniture checks apply too and are on the kids & nursery furniture page.

Look for a moulded wordmark

A factory moulding carries its maker's name cut into the tool, usually under the seat pan or the table top. A stick-on foil label, or a bare underside with no mark at all, means you are buying an unbranded local moulding described as a Boss.

Run the parting seam

Slide a finger along the seam that runs round the seat edge and down the legs. Sharp flash or a stepped, mismatched seam points to a worn tool, and on a child's chair those burrs cut hands and catch clothing.

Check the colour for streaking

Hold the underside to the light and look for marbling or grey streaks running through the colour, which indicates recycled regrind in the mix. Regrind is more brittle than virgin material and cracks earlier at any thin section.

Test the table screw bosses

Children's tables usually have detachable legs threading into moulded bosses under the top. Fit and remove each leg: a boss that spins, cross-threads or has split around the screw cannot be repaired and leaves the table permanently unsteady.

Measure the finger gaps

Check the slot between the backrest and the seat, and any handle cut-out, against a small child's finger. A chair that an owner has re-drilled or trimmed can carry gaps and cut edges the original tool never produced.

What Boss kids & nursery furniture are worth

  • The name carries little weight in this category, because the brand's standing here was built on appliances, so a used piece is priced on the moulding rather than the badge.
  • Recycled regrind in the mix cannot be undone and shows up as early cracking, which is why streaky plastic grades below clean colour even when both look intact.
  • Moulded screw bosses are the one repairable-looking part that is not repairable, so a stripped boss on an activity table caps the grade of the whole set.
  • A locally made equivalent sits on the shelves of the same general and hardware shops, so buyers compare against a new chair and cosmetic condition governs the offer.

General kids & nursery furniture checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the kids & nursery furniture page covers them in full.

Measure the gaps between slats

On a cot, a standard drink can should not pass between two slats, and the spacing should be even the whole way round. Uneven gaps, a missing slat or one that has been glued back in mean the cot has already failed once.

Push the assembled bunk sideways

With the bunk standing, push the upper frame along its length and then across it, and do the same at a cot's corner posts with the side rail at its highest setting. These are the joints that carry a sleeping child. Sway with a click, or a gap opening at a post, is loosened knock-down fittings; a bolt that spins without biting means the hole is stripped and the post will not hold.

Lift the mattress base

Take the mattress out and lift the base board off its brackets. Check the metal brackets and screws that carry the base at each height setting for bending or rust, and look at the underside of the board for swelling or a tide mark left by liquid sitting there.

Check the mattress underneath

Cot mattresses take the worst of it. Stains, a sour smell or a hollow in the middle mean it should be replaced rather than reused, and a mattress that has been soaked usually tells you the board beneath it has swollen too.

Check the bunk guard rail

The guard rail on an upper bunk should sit well clear of the mattress top and be bolted rather than slotted into place. Rock the ladder in its brackets as well: rungs that turn in their sockets and hook-on ladders with worn hooks are the parts that fail first.

Count the fittings

Flat-pack cots, bunks and study desks are held together by model-specific bolts and barrel nuts. Count them against the holes and ask for the Allen key and instruction sheet. On a discontinued model, missing fittings mean matching threads by hand at a hardware shop.

Boss kids & nursery furniture — questions

How do I know a kids chair is really a Boss?

Look for the name cut into the tool on the underside of the seat or table top, not a foil sticker, which can be applied to anything. Boss is known in Pakistan as an appliance manufacturer, so a children's moulding under the name is unusual enough to be worth confirming before you pay for the badge rather than the chair.

Can a cracked Boss plastic table be repaired?

Not to a standard a child should sit at. Polypropylene takes neither glue nor an ordinary field repair to structural strength, and the wire, cable-tie and self-tapping-screw fixes you see under second-hand pieces add holes that concentrate stress at the point that already failed. A stripped leg boss is the same story, since the thread is part of the moulding.
