Used Interwood home furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Interwood home furniture worth buying?

Interwood is a Pakistani manufacturer with a home range, a fitted-kitchen line and a large office division, and used pieces in Islamabad come out of all three. Which one you are looking at matters more than the finish: a contract-built desk or storage unit is heavier board with a keyed lock, while a fitted kitchen or wardrobe run was cut to one room and does not simply move to another.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Interwood manufactures locally and keeps showrooms in both cities, and the split that matters is between what is counter stock and what has to be looked up: hinge cups, side-mount runners and handles a carpenter fits the same day, while soft-close dampers, undermount kitchen runners, keyed locks and a replacement door in the original finish are ordered against the range. Nothing here waits on an import, but the ordered parts wait on the showroom.

Checking a used Interwood home furniture

These are specific to Interwood. The general home furniture checks apply too and are on the home furniture page.

Tell contract from home

Interwood's office division uses thicker tops, metal understructures, cable ports and keyed locks, and the home range does not. Turn the piece round and look at the back and underside, because a contract desk is built to take daily use but is cut to office depths that suit only some rooms.

Read the lock face

Storage units and pedestals from the office side use keyed cam locks, and many carry a code stamped on the lock face or the key itself. With that code a lock supplier can cut a replacement; without it the lock is drilled out, which marks the door around it.

Look for scribe cuts

A kitchen or wardrobe run that was fitted announces itself: filler strips scribed to a wall, cut edges with no banding on them, and a worktop cut around a hob or a sink. Those cuts were made for one room, so the carcasses are being sold as parts even when they look like furniture.

Check which runners are fitted

Pull a drawer right out and look underneath it. Side-mounted runners are catalogue lengths any carpenter can replace, but undermount runners fixed beneath the drawer box are matched to that box and are ordered against the range rather than bought over a counter.

What Interwood home furniture are worth

  • A fitted kitchen or wardrobe loses most of its value the moment it comes off the wall, because the cut worktop and scribed fillers belong to one room and only the doors and the hardware transfer.
  • Contract-built pieces come through a move better than home-range board, having been specified for daily office use, but their depths and heights limit which rooms they suit.
  • Keys decide the grade on any locking unit: a missing key is not a fault in the furniture, but it turns the sale into a lock replacement and buyers treat it as one.
  • Board is the part with no substitute — hinges and side-mount runners are counter stock and swap out in an afternoon, whereas a swollen or delaminating panel means a replacement door or side ordered against the range.

General home furniture checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the home furniture page covers them in full.

Find the unfinished edge

Pull a drawer right out and look at the raw edge of its side, or check the underside of a table top. Continuous grain running from the face through to the edge means solid timber; a pressed, speckled core under a printed foil means board, which rarely survives being taken apart and moved a second time.

Tap the legs for termite

Knock along the bottom few inches of every leg and across the back panel, and look at the floor underneath for fine powder. Solid taps and a clean floor are what you want; a hollow note, mud tunnelling, or small pinholes mean termite, and the infestation travels into your house with the piece.

Work every drawer and door

Open and close each drawer and door through its full travel. A drawer should run without the whole carcass lifting and a door should sit flush with an even gap; a door that droops at its outer corner usually means the hinge screws have torn out of board and need dowelling before they will hold again.

Push it diagonally

Stand at one corner and push the piece gently across its diagonal. A sound wardrobe or table barely moves; visible racking, a creak, or a gap opening at a joint means the mortise-and-tenon work has loosened or the knock-down bolts have stretched their holes.

Rake light across the top

Crouch so a light skims across the top surface instead of shining straight down on it. Faint scratches and dull patches polish out; white heat rings, swollen edges and veneer lifting at the corners are water damage and they stay.

Measure the piece and route

Take height, width and depth, then measure your stairwell turn, lift car and door frames before agreeing anything. Ask whether the piece dismantles and whether its bolts, cam locks and shelf pins are still with it, because a fixed-frame wardrobe that cannot make the turn is worth nothing to you.

Interwood home furniture — questions

Are spare parts available for used Interwood furniture?

For most moving parts, yes. Interwood manufactures in Pakistan, and hinge cups, side-mount drawer runners and handles are standard sizes a carpenter fits without ordering anything. The parts that have to be looked up against the range are soft-close dampers, undermount kitchen runners, keyed locks and any replacement door in the original finish, all of which come through a showroom rather than the trade.

Is a used Interwood fitted kitchen worth buying?

Only if you are buying it for the doors and the hardware. A fitted run was cut to one room, so the worktop, the filler strips and often the end panels will not serve a second kitchen without being remade. Look for scribe cuts, unbanded edges and a worktop cut around a hob, then treat the carcasses as parts rather than as a kitchen.
