Used Habitt home furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Habitt home furniture worth buying?

Habitt makes its furniture in Pakistan and sells it through its own stores, mostly boxed flat-pack in laminate-faced board. That matters second-hand, because a damaged panel is not automatically the end of the piece: a carpenter here can cut a replacement in the same board and band the edge, provided the facing is a décor the local board market actually stocks.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Habitt manufactures in Pakistan and fits standard hardware, so cams, dowels, hinges, runners and handles are same-day items in Rawalpindi's hardware markets. Panels are the harder half: a carpenter can cut and band a replacement while the décor is a common one, otherwise a matching faced panel has to come through the store.

Checking a used Habitt home furniture

These are specific to Habitt. The general home furniture checks apply too and are on the home furniture page.

Measure an exposed edge

Take a tape to the thickness of a side panel or a shelf, because board is stocked here in a small number of standard thicknesses and a panel matching one of them can be copied by any carpenter. An odd thickness has to be built up instead of cut.

Match the décor colour

Plain white, walnut and oak-effect laminates are carried by board merchants in Rawalpindi, so a damaged panel in one of those can be re-cut and re-banded to match. A textured, embossed or unusual tone generally cannot be matched, which makes that damage permanent.

Tap the tops and doors

A hollow ring means a honeycomb-cored panel rather than solid board. Those hold a screw only in the narrow frame around the edge, so once a hinge or a cam has torn out of one there is nothing solid left to re-drill into.

Feel the bottom edges

Board wicks water upwards from a washed floor. Run a hand along the bottom edge of each side panel and along the feet, since a soft, slightly swollen feel means damp has reached the core and that cannot be dried back out.

What Habitt home furniture are worth

  • A piece in a commonly stocked décor keeps more of its grade after damage than an identical one in an unusual finish, because a carpenter can only match what the board market carries.
  • Solid-cored panels are worth more than honeycomb-cored ones on the same piece, since a torn-out fitting can be re-drilled and plugged in solid board and has nothing to bite on in a hollow panel.
  • Swelling at the base pushes a board piece towards For Parts / Repair, because damp in the core is not reversible and the panel has to be replaced rather than treated.

General home furniture checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the home furniture page covers them in full.

Find the unfinished edge

Pull a drawer right out and look at the raw edge of its side, or check the underside of a table top. Continuous grain running from the face through to the edge means solid timber; a pressed, speckled core under a printed foil means board, which rarely survives being taken apart and moved a second time.

Tap the legs for termite

Knock along the bottom few inches of every leg and across the back panel, and look at the floor underneath for fine powder. Solid taps and a clean floor are what you want; a hollow note, mud tunnelling, or small pinholes mean termite, and the infestation travels into your house with the piece.

Work every drawer and door

Open and close each drawer and door through its full travel. A drawer should run without the whole carcass lifting and a door should sit flush with an even gap; a door that droops at its outer corner usually means the hinge screws have torn out of board and need dowelling before they will hold again.

Push it diagonally

Stand at one corner and push the piece gently across its diagonal. A sound wardrobe or table barely moves; visible racking, a creak, or a gap opening at a joint means the mortise-and-tenon work has loosened or the knock-down bolts have stretched their holes.

Rake light across the top

Crouch so a light skims across the top surface instead of shining straight down on it. Faint scratches and dull patches polish out; white heat rings, swollen edges and veneer lifting at the corners are water damage and they stay.

Measure the piece and route

Take height, width and depth, then measure your stairwell turn, lift car and door frames before agreeing anything. Ask whether the piece dismantles and whether its bolts, cam locks and shelf pins are still with it, because a fixed-frame wardrobe that cannot make the turn is worth nothing to you.

Habitt home furniture — questions

Can a damaged panel on a Habitt piece be replaced?

Usually, because the furniture is made here in ordinary laminate-faced board. A carpenter cuts a new panel to the same thickness, bands the edge and re-drills the fittings. The limit is the facing: white, walnut and oak-effect décors are stocked by board merchants in Rawalpindi, while a textured or unusual finish has to come from the store, and only while that range is still made.

Is a used Habitt wardrobe or sideboard a safe buy?

Check three things in this order. Tap the doors and the top for a hollow ring, which tells you whether the panels are solid enough to re-drill when a fitting tears out. Feel the bottom edges for the softness that means damp has come up from the floor. Then judge whether the décor is a common one. Hinges and runners are standard sizes and rarely the problem.
