Used Index home furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Index home furniture worth buying?

Index pieces are imported Thai flat-pack: board carcasses, their own fittings and, on many dining and console designs, a tempered glass top. Second-hand in Islamabad they usually come from flats being cleared, and they grade quickly. A glass top is either sound or gone, and a carcass is either square or it is not.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

Index comes into Pakistan through franchised retail rather than local manufacture, so rollers, connectors and replacement glass are outlet orders with a wait. A glazier here can cut a new tempered top to size, which is often the practical route, and a carpenter can re-drill for generic fittings at the cost of some strength.

Checking a used Index home furniture

These are specific to Index. The general home furniture checks apply too and are on the home furniture page.

Check the glass top edges

Tempered tops chip at the corners and an edge chip is where a break starts. Run a finger round every edge and check the rubber pads under the glass are present, because glass sitting directly on board cracks.

Slide the doors fully

Sliding wardrobe and cabinet doors run on rollers made to the design. A door that jumps its track or drags means the roller or the rail is worn, and neither is an off-the-shelf part here.

Confirm the fittings bag

Imported flat-pack has its own bolt and cam sizes. Ask whether the original fittings came with the piece, because substituted local screws in pre-drilled holes chew the board and never pull it fully square.

Check the base for swelling

Board carcasses take up water from the floor. Press along the bottom edge of each side panel, since softness there is permanent and keeps spreading upward.

What Index home furniture are worth

  • Completeness drives the grade on imported flat-pack, because a missing fitting, roller or glass top cannot be replaced locally at any sensible effort.
  • Glass tops make Index pieces easy to grade but risky to move, as a chipped edge is a fault that gets worse rather than staying still.
  • Contemporary imported styling is in demand for flats, but discontinued ranges cannot be extended with matching units, which caps what the piece is useful for.

General home furniture checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the home furniture page covers them in full.

Find the unfinished edge

Pull a drawer right out and look at the raw edge of its side, or check the underside of a table top. Continuous grain running from the face through to the edge means solid timber; a pressed, speckled core under a printed foil means board, which rarely survives being taken apart and moved a second time.

Tap the legs for termite

Knock along the bottom few inches of every leg and across the back panel, and look at the floor underneath for fine powder. Solid taps and a clean floor are what you want; a hollow note, mud tunnelling, or small pinholes mean termite, and the infestation travels into your house with the piece.

Work every drawer and door

Open and close each drawer and door through its full travel. A drawer should run without the whole carcass lifting and a door should sit flush with an even gap; a door that droops at its outer corner usually means the hinge screws have torn out of board and need dowelling before they will hold again.

Push it diagonally

Stand at one corner and push the piece gently across its diagonal. A sound wardrobe or table barely moves; visible racking, a creak, or a gap opening at a joint means the mortise-and-tenon work has loosened or the knock-down bolts have stretched their holes.

Rake light across the top

Crouch so a light skims across the top surface instead of shining straight down on it. Faint scratches and dull patches polish out; white heat rings, swollen edges and veneer lifting at the corners are water damage and they stay.

Measure the piece and route

Take height, width and depth, then measure your stairwell turn, lift car and door frames before agreeing anything. Ask whether the piece dismantles and whether its bolts, cam locks and shelf pins are still with it, because a fixed-frame wardrobe that cannot make the turn is worth nothing to you.

Index home furniture — questions

What if the glass top on an Index table is broken?

A glazier in Rawalpindi can cut and temper a replacement to the same size, which is usually quicker than ordering through an outlet. Take the exact dimensions, the thickness and the corner radius from the old top, and replace the rubber pads underneath, because glass sitting directly on board is what causes the next crack.

Are Index sliding wardrobe doors a problem second-hand?

They are the part to test hardest. The rollers and rails are made to the design and are not stocked locally, so a door that drags or jumps its track means an outlet order and a wait. Slide each door its full travel several times before agreeing anything; a smooth run is worth more than a clean finish.
