Used Growatt generators, ups & solar in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Growatt generators, ups & solar worth buying?

Growatt inverters are imported from China and sit on a great many Pakistani rooftops, so used units appear whenever a system is upgraded or a house changes hands. Two things follow from being an import: warranty and board-level support run through whichever distributor brought the unit in, and the monitoring dongle must be released from the previous owner's account before it is any use to you.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

Support runs through the importing distributor in Pakistan: replacement fans, display boards and firmware are handled there rather than on the open market. Independent solar workshops in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will attempt board-level repair, but whether the correct board can be obtained depends on who imported the unit.

Checking a used Growatt generators, ups & solar

These are specific to Growatt. The general generators, ups & solar checks apply too and are on the generators, ups & solar page.

Unbind the monitoring account

The datalogger stays tied to the previous owner's app account until they remove it. Confirm this has been done, or the buyer will not be able to add the system to their own account.

Photograph the serial label

Distributor warranty and firmware support are keyed to the serial on the side label. It also tells a buyer which batch and regional variant the unit belongs to.

Ask on-grid or hybrid

An on-grid string inverter cannot charge a battery whatever the advert calls it. Check the label and terminal compartment for a battery connection before assuming it will run anything at night.

Check fans and vents

These are fan-cooled and mounted outdoors more often than they should be. Listen for bearing noise and look for water staining or rust inside the wiring compartment.

Look for surge damage

Ask whether the system has been through a nearby lightning strike or a supply surge, then inspect the DC terminals and surge-protection modules for scorching and heat marks.

What Growatt generators, ups & solar are worth

  • Distributor-supplied units carry a support path that grey imports do not, and buyers who have chased a board repair care about it.
  • Hybrid models hold interest better than plain on-grid ones as households add batteries, because the same box keeps its role.
  • Outdoor-mounted units grade lower at the same age, since water ingress and dust are what finish these inverters.

General generators, ups & solar checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the generators, ups & solar page covers them in full.

Start it from cold

Ask that the generator has not been run that morning. A healthy engine catches within a few pulls, or on the first turn of the key, and settles to a steady note. Long cranking, a haze of unburnt petrol or blue smoke that will not clear after a minute points at worn rings or a carburettor that has been standing.

Run it under load

No-load running proves very little. Plug in something substantial, an iron or a heater, and listen. The engine should take the load with a brief dip and then hold. Lights that dim and brighten, or an engine hunting up and down, suggest a tired governor or a failing AVR.

Check the oil and smoke

Pull the dipstick before anything is started. Oil that is milky, thin or smells of petrol tells you more than any test run. Under load, black smoke is a fuelling problem and blue smoke is oil getting past the rings, and both are easier to spot before the engine is warm enough to hide them.

Inspect the battery bank

On a UPS or solar setup the batteries carry much of the value. Look for the manufacture date on the case, bulging sides, powdery corrosion at the terminals and low electrolyte in a tubular cell. A bank that charges full and then runs a couple of fans for minutes rather than hours is finished.

Watch the changeover

Switch off the main breaker with a fan and a light running. A sound inverter takes over without the fan stopping and without loud relay chatter. Note also whether it is a pure sine wave unit or a modified wave one, which makes fans and motors buzz and is wanted less.

Hold panels to the light

Look across a panel face at an angle. Cracked glass, hairline crazing across the cells, brown snail trails and bubbling of the plastic back sheet all mean output that will not come back. Check the junction box cover is sealed and the MC4 leads are not perished, and read the rating plate rather than trusting a quoted figure.

Growatt generators, ups & solar — questions

Why must a used Growatt inverter be unbound from the old account?

The Wi-Fi datalogger stays registered to the previous owner's monitoring account until they remove it, and until that happens the new owner cannot add the system to their own. It takes the seller a couple of minutes and is impossible for the buyer, so agree it before collection, along with handing over the serial from the side label.

Can a Growatt on-grid inverter be used with batteries?

No. A plain on-grid string inverter has no battery port and cannot charge or discharge a bank, whatever the advert calls it. Check the label and the terminal compartment for a battery connection before buying, because converting an on-grid system to storage means a different inverter rather than an accessory bolted on afterwards.
