Used AGS generators, ups & solar in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used AGS generators, ups & solar worth buying?
AGS batteries are made in Karachi by Atlas Battery Limited under a technical collaboration with GS Yuasa of Japan, and the dealer network behind them reaches every neighbourhood market in the twin cities. That is what makes a used one straightforward: a battery shop will put it on a load tester as a matter of routine, and a tested battery is a different proposition from one judged by the look of its case.
Made or assembled in Pakistan
Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.
There are no spare parts for a battery; what AGS has instead is a service counter. Dealers across Islamabad and Rawalpindi will charge it, load test it, top up a floodable type and take an old case in exchange, and a warranty claim is settled there rather than sent anywhere — while sealed maintenance-free types cannot be topped up at all and are replaced rather than nursed.

These are specific to AGS. The general generators, ups & solar checks apply too and are on the generators, ups & solar page.
Check for a re-lidded case
Refilled batteries are sold under the strongest names, so look for fresh sealant along the lid seam, a lid and case in slightly different shades of plastic, and paint or a new sticker sitting over lettering moulded into the shell. Re-cast terminal posts leave a ring at the base.
Read the punched card
Cover is stated in months and settled at the dealer's counter against a card punched or stamped at the time of sale. That card dates the battery and names the dealer; without it the date rests on the case code alone, and codes differ between the flat-plate and tubular lines.
Match the terminal format
Atlas's flat-plate types follow the Japanese JIS pattern, where the posts are tapered and come in two sizes. A clamp made for the other size never tightens properly, and a loose clamp heats and pits the post.
Weigh it in hand
Lead is what a battery is made of, so between two of the same case size the heavier one carries more plate. A battery that feels light for its case is telling you something no label will.
Have a dealer load test
Because the network is everywhere here, a used AGS can be tested at a counter before money changes hands: charged, rested, then pulled down under load while the voltage is watched. Ask for that rather than for a reading off a multimeter.
What AGS generators, ups & solar are worth
- The punched card is worth more than the battery's appearance, because a claim is settled at the counter against that card and a battery arriving without one has no claimable history whatever its condition.
- A shell whose lid seam and moulded lettering are untouched grades above one that has been re-lidded, since a refilled battery is somebody else's plates in a familiar case.
- Even a failed AGS has a defined route out, because the dealer trade takes old cases in exchange and the lead is reprocessed, which puts a floor under a dead one that an unsupported badge does not have.
- Duty history moves the grade more than the year does, because the thin plates of a starting type are worn by nightly cycling on a UPS in a way that starting an engine does not.
General generators, ups & solar checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the generators, ups & solar page covers them in full.
Start it from cold
Ask that the generator has not been run that morning. A healthy engine catches within a few pulls, or on the first turn of the key, and settles to a steady note. Long cranking, a haze of unburnt petrol or blue smoke that will not clear after a minute points at worn rings or a carburettor that has been standing.
Run it under load
No-load running proves very little. Plug in something substantial, an iron or a heater, and listen. The engine should take the load with a brief dip and then hold. Lights that dim and brighten, or an engine hunting up and down, suggest a tired governor or a failing AVR.
Check the oil and smoke
Pull the dipstick before anything is started. Oil that is milky, thin or smells of petrol tells you more than any test run. Under load, black smoke is a fuelling problem and blue smoke is oil getting past the rings, and both are easier to spot before the engine is warm enough to hide them.
Inspect the battery bank
On a UPS or solar setup the batteries carry much of the value. Look for the manufacture date on the case, bulging sides, powdery corrosion at the terminals and low electrolyte in a tubular cell. A bank that charges full and then runs a couple of fans for minutes rather than hours is finished.
Watch the changeover
Switch off the main breaker with a fan and a light running. A sound inverter takes over without the fan stopping and without loud relay chatter. Note also whether it is a pure sine wave unit or a modified wave one, which makes fans and motors buzz and is wanted less.
Hold panels to the light
Look across a panel face at an angle. Cracked glass, hairline crazing across the cells, brown snail trails and bubbling of the plastic back sheet all mean output that will not come back. Check the junction box cover is sealed and the MC4 leads are not perished, and read the rating plate rather than trusting a quoted figure.
