Used GFC fans & air coolers in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used GFC fans & air cooler worth buying?

GFC is made in Gujrat and sells through dealers nationwide, and its ceiling and pedestal fans turn up constantly second-hand across both cities. The motor is an AC induction design that can be rewound and re-bushed almost indefinitely, so age matters less than two other things: whether the fan is genuinely a GFC, and which of its models — Deluxe, Super Deluxe, Myga — you are looking at.

Made or assembled in Pakistan

Spares are widely stocked locally and most technicians in the twin cities have worked on these, so common faults are usually economic to repair.

Capacitors, blades, regulators and bearings for GFC fans are stocked across Rawalpindi's electrical markets, and rewinding is routine work for any local winder in both cities. What needs the dealer network is anything matched to a model — blade sets, canopies and covers — which is why the model name on the plate is worth more on a GFC than the year it was made.

Checking a used GFC fans & air cooler

These are specific to GFC. The general fans & air coolers checks apply too and are on the fans & air coolers page.

Read the cast marking

GFC is widely imitated with lookalike decals, and the copies come out of the same district on similar pressings, so the shape of the fan tells you nothing. Read the marking cast into the body and the rating plate for the Gujrat Fan Company name rather than trusting a printed sticker.

Name the model range

GFC sells distinct models, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Myga among them, and body parts are matched to the model rather than to the badge. Note the name from the plate, because a model no GFC dealer recognises is worth questioning before anything else is checked.

Lift it before buying

A genuine copper-wound GFC is heavy for its sweep, while a copy wound in aluminium or copper-clad wire feels light in the hand. Lifting two fans of the same sweep side by side tells you more about the winding than any decal does.

Stack the three blades

Lay the blades on top of one another and compare pitch and fixing holes. A difference means one has been replaced from another model or straightened after a knock, and mismatched blades produce a wobble that gets blamed on the bearings and paid for twice.

What GFC fans & air coolers are worth

  • A verifiable GFC resells more easily than an equally sound fan whose badge cannot be checked, because verifying the name is the first thing a buyer here tries to do.
  • An original copper winding is what the name is being bought for, and it is judged by weight in the hand, so a fan that feels light for its sweep loses value however well it runs.
  • Model identity holds value because blades, canopies and covers are matched to a named GFC model, so an unreadable model name costs more than an untidy finish does.
  • Fresh paint over the motor housing discounts the fan on suspicion alone, since it reads as a motor that has already been opened.

General fans & air coolers checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the fans & air coolers page covers them in full.

Spin the blades by hand

With the power off, turn the blades. A healthy fan coasts several turns and stops smoothly. A gritty feel, a rumble or a rotor that drags means dry or worn bushes, and a fan run in that state will cook its winding within a season.

Feel the motor housing

Run it on full for fifteen to twenty minutes, then put a hand on the housing. Warm is normal. Too hot to hold, or a smell like burnt varnish, means the winding is going. That smell never clears, and rewinding a domestic fan seldom repays what it costs.

Watch for wobble

Start a ceiling fan and watch the canopy. Wobble usually comes from a bent blade arm, mismatched blades or a loose down-rod rather than from the motor. Sight along each blade for a bend and check the mounting holes in the arms for elongation, which is what makes a fan impossible to balance afterwards.

Test the start

A fan that hums but only turns once you nudge a blade has a weak capacitor. It is an inexpensive part, but it should be found before money changes hands. Step through every regulator position too: a dead speed points at the regulator or a broken winding tap rather than at the capacitor.

Watch the cooler pads wet

Fill an air cooler's tank, switch the pump on and look at the top of the pads. Water should spread across the whole width within a minute. Dry stripes mean a blocked distributor pipe or a weak pump. Honeycomb pads that have collapsed or gone crusty with salt need replacing before the machine will cool at all.

Press the cooler tank

Push the sides of the water tank and inspect the drain plug and base corners. Plastic that has stood in the sun goes chalky and brittle, and hairline cracks there open up as soon as the tank is full. While you are there, spin the blower wheel by hand for bearing noise and work the swing louvre through its travel.

GFC fans & air coolers — questions

Is a used GFC ceiling fan worth buying in Islamabad?

Usually, because the design is repairable rather than disposable: the induction motor can be rewound and re-bushed by ordinary local workshops, and capacitors, blades and regulators are stocked everywhere. The risk is not wear, it is authenticity. Check the cast body marking and the rating plate for the Gujrat Fan Company name, note which model it is, and lift it, since a copy wound in aluminium feels light for its size.

How do I tell a genuine GFC fan from a copy?

Work through three things in order. Read the marking cast into the motor body and the rating plate, which should name Gujrat Fan Company rather than a similar-sounding one; a decal on its own proves nothing, since copies use the same pressings. Then check the model name against what a GFC dealer lists. Then lift the fan, because copper winding gives a genuine unit real weight for its sweep.
