Is a used IKEA sofas & living room worth buying?
IKEA does not retail in Pakistan, so the pieces that appear second-hand in Islamabad have come in with returning families, diplomatic households and personal imports. The upside is real, since many IKEA sofa covers unzip and wash, so a marked sofa can come back. The catch is that a lost cover cannot be reordered from anywhere local.

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
There is no IKEA store or service counter in Pakistan, so spares are limited to what arrives with imported goods. Assembly manuals and part numbers are published online, which makes identification easy but sourcing no easier, and generic hardware substitutes for dowels and cams though not for struts, covers or moulded parts.

Read the sewn article label
IKEA sews a label under the seat or inside the frame carrying the product name and an eight-digit article number. That number is how a cover, a leg or a cushion insert is identified, and without it the piece is just an unbranded sofa.
Unzip and check the cover
Covers on ranges such as EKTORP and KIVIK come off for washing. Check the zips still run, that the cover has not shrunk from hot washing, and that the seams at the arm fronts are intact.
Look for substituted fittings
Frames use IKEA's own bolts and cam fittings. Mismatched or over-length screws at the leg mountings usually mean the piece has been reassembled with whatever was to hand, and the board around them may already be chewed.
Work any storage mechanism
Sofa-beds and storage seats have a fold or lift action. Cycle it fully, because the gas strut or hinge is the one part with no local equivalent and it cannot be repaired the way a timber frame can.

Sit in every seat
Sit down with your full weight in each seat position, including the middle of a three-seater and the corner of an L-shape. You should feel even support throughout; a hard bar or ridge under you, or a twang as you settle, means the webbing has torn or a serpentine spring has snapped beneath that seat.
Press and release the foam
Press a palm into the seat cushion and watch how fast it comes back. Good foam returns to shape as you lift your hand; foam that stays dented, or that shows yellow crumbling edges through the open zip, is spent and the set needs refilling before it is comfortable again.
Lift one end
Take hold of one arm and lift that end a few inches clear of the floor. A sound sofa comes up as a single rigid piece; if the far end lags, the frame flexes, or you hear a crack from the arm-to-base joint, the frame is loose and reaching it means stripping the upholstery off.
Smell the seat cushions
Put your face close to the seat deck and to a cushion and breathe in. Neutral or faintly dusty is fine; cigarette smoke, damp, or pet urine has gone into the foam rather than the cover, and no amount of surface cleaning removes a smell that lives in the filling.
Unzip a cushion cover
Open a cushion zip and run a torch along the piping, the staple line, and the seams under the seat deck. Clean fabric and tight stitching are what you want; dark specks, shed skins, or insects in the folds mean an infestation, and the reverse of the fabric will also show whether rexine is cracking from behind.
Work the recliner mechanism
If the set has recliners, a sofa-cum-bed frame, or storage under the seat, run each one through its full travel several times. It should latch firmly at every stop and move evenly on both sides; a jolt, a jam, or one side lagging means a bent mechanism, and spare parts for imported units are usually not available here.
