Used Mothercare baby & kids items in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Mothercare baby & kids item worth buying?

Mothercare is a retailer's own brand rather than a manufacturer's: the prams, cots and feeding gear were specified by the shop and built by whichever factory won the contract, then brought here through franchised stores and family imports. Since the UK shops closed there is no retailer to go back to either, so treat the sewn-in label as the item's only identity and assume nothing on it can be ordered.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

Mothercare own-brand goods are built to a retailer's specification by varied manufacturers, so no spares catalogue exists even in the UK, and with the UK shops closed there is no counter to ask. Locally only the standard fixings and a cut-to-size foam mattress can be replaced; every moulded and sewn part should be graded as permanent.

Checking a used Mothercare baby & kids item

These are specific to Mothercare. The general baby & kids items checks apply too and are on the baby & kids items page.

Read the sewn-in label

On own-brand goods the label is the whole identity: a Mothercare product code and a British Standard number rather than a manufacturer's model. Where it has been cut off, nothing else on the item will identify it, and matching a hood, apron or side panel becomes guesswork.

Find the maker's moulded mark

The retailer specified it, but another factory built it. Turn the chassis and the wheel hubs over and look for moulded factory codes or a second brand in the plastic — that mark is the only realistic lead to a compatible part, because the retailer's name leads nowhere.

Separate hardware from moulded parts

Cot bolts, barrel nuts and Allen fixings are ordinary metric hardware and any hardware shop in Rawalpindi can match them. The moulded cam locks, fold catches and brake bars were made to the retailer's specification, so sort the two before deciding a grade: one is a shopping trip, the other ends the item.

Measure the cot base

A missing mattress is the one gap that closes locally — measure the base and have foam cut to it. Every fabric part, from raincover to hood to seat liner, was specified for that model alone and has no substitute, so those cannot be treated the same way.

What Mothercare baby & kids items are worth

  • An intact sewn-in label supports value, because on a retailer-specified item it is the only thing that identifies the model closely enough to match a part or a cover.
  • Timber cots hold value better than fabric goods, since what fails on them is bolts and fixings that any hardware shop can match, while a faded hood or torn raincover was made for that model alone.
  • Completeness dominates here, because no component was ever made for general sale — a missing raincover or side panel costs more than the equivalent amount of cosmetic wear.

General baby & kids items checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the baby & kids items page covers them in full.

Fold and unfold the pram

Do it three times. The fold catch and the secondary safety latch should click home on their own, without coaxing, and the wheels should not wobble on their axles. Push it and apply the brake on a slope; a brake that creeps is a daily hazard, not a small fault.

Read the car seat labels

Most seats carry a manufacture date moulded into the shell and a label on the base, and the plastic and webbing age from that date whether the seat has been used or not. No legible label, or an unclear accident history, means the seat should not be fitted in a car at any grade.

Work the harness and buckle

Pull the five-point webbing through its adjuster and back. It should run freely, with no fraying where it passes through the shell slots. The buckle must release with a firm press and latch with a clear click; a sticky or gritty buckle is a fail, not a clean-up job.

Shake the cot frame

Press down hard on the base and rock the frame corner to corner. It should not rack or creak. Check that every bolt is present and is the original fitting rather than something from a hardware shop, and look along the top rails for teething damage and splinters.

Lift the cover off

Take the seat pad or mattress cover off and look and smell underneath. Fabric can be washed; foam that has taken milk, urine or damp cannot be brought back, and mould spotting on the underside of a mattress means the whole piece is done.

Open the battery compartment

On toys, bouncers and ride-ons, look for green or white crust on the contacts, which means a battery has leaked and the electronics may be corroded. Check the hatch screws are present, then tug wheels, eyes and small fittings to see that nothing works loose in the hand.

Mothercare baby & kids items — questions

Are used Mothercare cots and prams worth buying in Pakistan?

Cots and nursery furniture, yes: what fails on them is bolts and fixings, and those are ordinary metric hardware any local shop can match. Prams only if complete, because the hood, apron, raincover and brake bar were made to the retailer's specification for that model alone. Check the sewn-in label is still there before you commit.

Can Mothercare pram parts be found in Islamabad?

Realistically no. These were specified by a retailer and built by different manufacturers, so even the correct model name leads to an old shop listing rather than a parts catalogue, and there is no service channel here. The workarounds are local ones: an upholsterer can restitch fabric, a foam shop can cut a cot mattress, a hardware shop can match bolts. Moulded hinges, catches and brake bars cannot be.
