Used Yamaha audio, speakers & home theatre in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Yamaha audio, speakers & home theatre worth buying?
Yamaha in this market means AV receivers above all, and a receiver is the one audio product where what is missing costs the most. The YPAO calibration microphone that sets speaker distances and levels is supplied with the unit and is not generic. Voltage is the other question, since Japanese-domestic receivers are built for hundred-volt mains.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
Yamaha audio is imported, so HDMI boards, calibration microphones and remotes are ordered in rather than stocked, and there is no broad authorised audio service presence in the twin cities. Independent workshops handle power supplies, output stages and connector work; digital-board faults are the ones that turn a receiver into a parts unit.

Checking a used Yamaha audio, speakers & home theatre
These are specific to Yamaha. The general audio, speakers & home theatre checks apply too and are on the audio, speakers & home theatre page.
Look for the YPAO microphone
Yamaha receivers set speaker levels and distances using a supplied measurement microphone. Without it the system is set by ear, and a replacement has to be ordered in and matched to the receiver's generation.
Read the voltage rating
Japanese-market receivers are rated at a hundred volts and need a transformer here, while export models state two hundred and twenty to two hundred and forty. It is printed by the mains inlet and takes a moment to check.
Pass video through every input
Feed a source into each HDMI input in turn and watch it reach the television. HDMI boards are the usual failure point on AV receivers, and a single dead input is a board-level repair on an imported unit.
Run it warm
Let the receiver drive speakers at a realistic level for a while. A unit that shuts into protection once warm generally has a shorted speaker lead, a failing output stage or blocked ventilation, and only the first of those is cheap.
What Yamaha audio, speakers & home theatre are worth
- A receiver complete with its YPAO microphone and original remote is worth clearly more than a bare unit, because both are generation-specific and imported.
- Export-market voltage is a value factor in itself, since a hundred-volt Japanese unit needs a transformer and that limits who will take it.
- HDMI board health decides most receiver grades, because that is the failure which turns a working amplifier into a parts item.
- Cosmetic condition matters less than heat history: a cool-running, well-ventilated unit outlives a clean-looking one that has been shut inside a cabinet.

General audio, speakers & home theatre checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the audio, speakers & home theatre page covers them in full.
Sweep the volume control
Turn the volume slowly from zero to loud with music playing. Crackle or a drop-out as the knob passes one point is usually a dirty potentiometer, which cleans up. A channel that fades in and out on its own, or cuts when the cabinet is tapped, is a dry solder joint or a failing output stage.
Drive each channel separately
Use the balance control, the setup menu's test tone, or move one speaker lead at a time so every output is heard alone. A home theatre missing its centre or a rear still sounds full on music, and the dead channel only becomes obvious once someone sits down to a film.
Press around the speaker surround
Run a finger gently around the ring between the cone and the frame. Foam surrounds perish with age and crumble to dust, and a perished surround buzzes on bass until it is re-foamed. Rubber surrounds that have gone hard and cracked behave the same way.
Listen for a rubbing woofer
Play something with steady low bass at moderate volume and listen for a rasp or scrape underneath the note. Press the cone straight down with fingers spread wide; it should travel smoothly with no grinding. A rubbing voice coil means that driver is finished.
Test every input in turn
Bluetooth pairing, USB, AUX, optical and HDMI ARC all fail independently of one another. On systems with a disc mechanism, load a disc as well, since trays that will not open and lasers that will not read are the usual first failure and the mechanism is often no longer supplied.
Check cabinets and batteries
Wooden and MDF speaker boxes that have stood on a wet floor swell along the bottom edge and the joints open, which changes how they sound and how they hold a screw. On rechargeable trolley speakers, unplug and run on battery for a few minutes; a pack that sags quickly, or a swollen one, needs replacing.
