Used Sony audio, speakers & home theatre in Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Is a used Sony audio, speakers & home theatre worth buying?

Sony's used trade here is dominated by the WH over-ear and WF true-wireless lines, with MHC party systems and HT bars behind them. What sets a Sony apart from most of the category is how much of it lives in software: pairing, firmware, the noise-cancelling optimiser and per-earbud battery reporting all run through Sony's own app, so a unit that app will not recognise is a different proposition.

Imported

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.

Sony audio is imported, and although the brand has an authorised distributor presence in the country, spares for a particular model are ordered rather than stocked. Ear pads and cables for the WH range are the exception, since generic-fit replacements are traded widely, while original drivers, sealed battery packs and DSP boards for MHC and HT units should be treated as a wait.

Checking a used Sony audio, speakers & home theatre

These are specific to Sony. The general audio, speakers & home theatre checks apply too and are on the audio, speakers & home theatre page.

Open Sony's own app

Sony's headphone app should recognise the model, report a firmware version and give a battery reading for each earbud separately. A unit it will not find, or that reports a model other than the one on the badge, is worth resolving before anything else is tested.

Run the cancelling optimiser

On WH models the noise-cancelling optimiser is started from the app and measures how the headphone is sitting on the head. It should complete rather than stall; when it fails repeatedly the cause is usually a blocked or damaged microphone port on the outside of a cup rather than the electronics.

Cover the right cup

Quick Attention is Sony's own gesture: a flat palm laid over the touch panel on the right cup should drop the music and pass outside sound through at once, restoring when you lift off. A panel that ignores it, or fires at random, has usually been cracked or delaminated.

Charge both buds and case

On WF earbuds each bud and the case carry their own sealed cell, none of them replaceable. Seat both buds, confirm both charge, and compare the two levels the app reports, since a pair whose levels drift far apart will run out on one side first.

Wave at the MHC panel

The larger MHC party systems use gesture control and a lit top panel: a hand passed over should change track or effect, and the lights should follow the music. Sony's Music Center app should also find the unit, which is the quickest confirmation that its wireless board is alive.

What Sony audio, speakers & home theatre are worth

  • A unit Sony's app recognises can be updated, optimised and have its battery state read, so it grades above one that never appears in the app, where none of that can be confirmed.
  • A WF set is worth much more complete than split, because the buds and the case each hold a sealed cell and a set without its case has no way to charge at all.
  • Ear pads are a consumable with a wide aftermarket, so perished pads cost a WH little grade, whereas a cracked headband slider is a structural repair on an imported part.
  • Everything here is imported, so a fault in a driver, a sealed pack or a DSP board means a wait for parts, which pushes a unit down the grades faster than on a locally made system.

General audio, speakers & home theatre checks

These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the audio, speakers & home theatre page covers them in full.

Sweep the volume control

Turn the volume slowly from zero to loud with music playing. Crackle or a drop-out as the knob passes one point is usually a dirty potentiometer, which cleans up. A channel that fades in and out on its own, or cuts when the cabinet is tapped, is a dry solder joint or a failing output stage.

Drive each channel separately

Use the balance control, the setup menu's test tone, or move one speaker lead at a time so every output is heard alone. A home theatre missing its centre or a rear still sounds full on music, and the dead channel only becomes obvious once someone sits down to a film.

Press around the speaker surround

Run a finger gently around the ring between the cone and the frame. Foam surrounds perish with age and crumble to dust, and a perished surround buzzes on bass until it is re-foamed. Rubber surrounds that have gone hard and cracked behave the same way.

Listen for a rubbing woofer

Play something with steady low bass at moderate volume and listen for a rasp or scrape underneath the note. Press the cone straight down with fingers spread wide; it should travel smoothly with no grinding. A rubbing voice coil means that driver is finished.

Test every input in turn

Bluetooth pairing, USB, AUX, optical and HDMI ARC all fail independently of one another. On systems with a disc mechanism, load a disc as well, since trays that will not open and lasers that will not read are the usual first failure and the mechanism is often no longer supplied.

Check cabinets and batteries

Wooden and MDF speaker boxes that have stood on a wet floor swell along the bottom edge and the joints open, which changes how they sound and how they hold a screw. On rechargeable trolley speakers, unplug and run on battery for a few minutes; a pack that sags quickly, or a swollen one, needs replacing.

Sony audio, speakers & home theatre — questions

How should I check used Sony WH-1000X headphones?

Start with Sony's app rather than the sound. It should find the headphone, name the model, report a firmware version and let you run the noise-cancelling optimiser; a unit it cannot see cannot be updated or checked. Then lay a palm over the touch panel for Quick Attention, flex the headband sliders while looking for hairline cracks, and press the ear pads for perished foam.

Are used Sony WF earbuds worth buying?

Only as a complete set, and only after checking both buds. The two earbuds and the charging case each contain a sealed cell that cannot be replaced, so a set sold without its case has no way to charge, and a pair whose buds report widely different levels in the app will run out on one side first. Confirm both seat, charge and pair together before anything else.
