Used Rattan outdoor & garden furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used Rattan outdoor & garden furniture worth buying?
Rattan on the local market is a material rather than a maker: nearly all of it is polyethylene strand woven over a metal frame, made up by workshops here as well as imported ready-made. That is the useful split when buying used, because the weave is a repairable skill traded locally while the frame underneath decides whether the set has any future at all.
Mixed — partly assembled locally
Parts availability depends on the model line: locally assembled ranges are straightforward, imported ones less so. Worth confirming before you count on a repair.
Weavers in Rawalpindi and Islamabad re-wrap synthetic rattan by the panel or by the whole chair, and strand is bought by the roll, so colour is matched approximately rather than exactly. Aluminium frames can be welded by a specialist, while a steel frame that has rusted through the tube is generally past economic repair.
Checking a used Rattan outdoor & garden furniture
These are specific to Rattan. The general outdoor & garden furniture checks apply too and are on the outdoor & garden furniture page.
Work out the frame metal
Lift the chair before anything else: aluminium is light and cannot rust, while painted steel is heavy and corrodes from inside the tube where nothing shows. Look hard at the leg ends, especially where a plastic foot is missing and water has been sitting.
Bend an armrest strand
Arms take the most handling and the most sun, so the strand goes brittle there first. A sound strand flexes and returns; one that creaks or snaps tells you the whole exposed face of the weave is at the same stage.
Find the strand ends
Look behind the frame rails to see how the weave is terminated — tucked and heat-sealed ends stay put, while stapled or glued ends work loose. One free end is how an entire panel unravels, so it is worth finding before you buy.
Sit on the seat panel
Polyethylene strand stretches under sustained weight and heat and does not shrink back. A seat that dishes noticeably under an adult has already crept, and the remedy is re-weaving the panel rather than tightening anything.
Separate cane from synthetic
Natural cane is paler, fibrous and splinters along its length, and it greys and splits if left uncovered here. Scratch a hidden strand: synthetic is the same colour all through, cane shows fibre, and cane will not survive on an open roof.
What Rattan outdoor & garden furniture are worth
- Re-weaving synthetic strand is an established trade in both cities, so damaged weave is a repair rather than a write-off as long as the frame is sound.
- Aluminium frames hold value well above painted steel, because steel corrodes inside the tube and gives no warning before a leg folds.
- Strand that has gone brittle from sun cannot be softened again, so the exposed face sets the grade even where the shaded side still looks new.
- Because the weave is repairable and a corroded frame is not, two sets in identical cosmetic condition can be worth quite different things depending on the metal.
General outdoor & garden furniture checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the outdoor & garden furniture page covers them in full.
Rub the plastic hard
Run a palm firmly across the top of a moulded chair back. Chalky white residue on your hand is ultraviolet damage, and plastic in that state snaps instead of flexing. Press down hard on the seat afterwards and watch the leg joints for stress whitening or a creak.
Tap the leg ends
Steel and iron frames rust from the inside out at the feet, where water sits after rain. Tip the piece up, look into the open tube ends and tap along the bottom of each leg with a coin. A dull, soft note or flaking scale means the tube is going, however good the paint looks higher up.
Feel the glass top edge
Patio glass is tempered, and a chip on the edge or a nick in the rim can let go on its own later. Run a finger round the full rim, check the top sits properly in its rubber pads or clips, and look for a bloom of scratches from years of being dragged.
Lift the cushions
Outdoor cushions absorb rain and dry slowly. Squeeze the foam at the back edge for damp, check the underside for mould speckling, and work the zips and piping, which go first. Fade on one side only shows the set sat at a fixed aspect to the sun.
Pull at the weave
On cane or rattan, look at the front seat edge and where strands tuck into the frame. A lifted or split strand unravels further every time somebody sits down. Natural cane splinters and darkens with age; synthetic weave over an aluminium frame turns brittle only after long sun exposure.
Open the parasol fully
Crank or push the umbrella all the way open and closed twice. Watch the rib pivots for bent rivets, and check the fabric at the rib tips, where sun-rotted cloth tears first. Ask whether the weighted base is included, because a parasol without its base is incomplete.
