Used IKEA outdoor & garden furniture in Islamabad & Rawalpindi
Is a used IKEA outdoor & garden furniture worth buying?
IKEA has no store in Pakistan, so what turns up in Islamabad arrived with a household move or a personal import. Its garden ranges are solid acacia or eucalyptus slats on bolt-together frames, which is the opposite of its indoor board furniture. That matters here: a carpenter can machine a slat and a hardware shop can match a metric bolt, while the moulded clips and connectors have no local source.
Imported
Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
With no IKEA outlet in Pakistan, original fittings arrive only with a traveller. A carpenter in Rawalpindi can machine a replacement slat, a hardware shop can match the metric bolts and an upholsterer can copy a cushion cover, which covers most faults, leaving the moulded clips, glides and modular connectors as the parts with no substitute.
Checking a used IKEA outdoor & garden furniture
These are specific to IKEA. The general outdoor & garden furniture checks apply too and are on the outdoor & garden furniture page.
Acacia, not board
IKEA garden ranges are solid acacia or eucalyptus with visible end grain, while most of its indoor furniture is particle board under a foil wrap. Confirm which one you are looking at, because board furniture pressed into terrace service is a different purchase and a different lifespan.
Count the modular sections
Ranges such as ÄPPLARÖ are built as sections that bolt into a corner sofa or a longer bench. Establish what the pieces present can still form on their own, and whether the connecting brackets came with them, since those brackets have no local supply.
Unzip the cushions
IKEA outdoor cushions are a cover over a separate foam inner. A presentable cover can sit over an inner that has taken water and never dried, so unzip it and press it; a cover can be copied by an upholsterer here, an outdoor-grade inner cannot be bought.
Ask when it was oiled
These ranges leave the factory stained rather than lacquered, on the expectation of re-oiling. Greying is only the surface, but timber left dry for years opens along the grain and splits at the slat ends where the fixings pass through, so look there rather than at the colour.
What IKEA outdoor & garden furniture are worth
- The modular ranges grade as a system: a set that still forms the seating it was designed as is worth more than the same sections without their connecting brackets.
- Silvered timber does not cap the grade, since sanding and oiling reverse it, so a grey but sound set should be judged on splits at the slat ends instead of on colour.
- A perished foam inner pulls a set down further than a faded cover, because a cover can be copied locally and an outdoor-grade inner cannot be bought here.
- Because the outdoor ranges are solid timber, a broken slat is a carpentry job rather than a write-off, so they hold condition value better than the brand's board furniture does.

General outdoor & garden furniture checks
These apply whatever the badge on the front says — the outdoor & garden furniture page covers them in full.
Rub the plastic hard
Run a palm firmly across the top of a moulded chair back. Chalky white residue on your hand is ultraviolet damage, and plastic in that state snaps instead of flexing. Press down hard on the seat afterwards and watch the leg joints for stress whitening or a creak.
Tap the leg ends
Steel and iron frames rust from the inside out at the feet, where water sits after rain. Tip the piece up, look into the open tube ends and tap along the bottom of each leg with a coin. A dull, soft note or flaking scale means the tube is going, however good the paint looks higher up.
Feel the glass top edge
Patio glass is tempered, and a chip on the edge or a nick in the rim can let go on its own later. Run a finger round the full rim, check the top sits properly in its rubber pads or clips, and look for a bloom of scratches from years of being dragged.
Lift the cushions
Outdoor cushions absorb rain and dry slowly. Squeeze the foam at the back edge for damp, check the underside for mould speckling, and work the zips and piping, which go first. Fade on one side only shows the set sat at a fixed aspect to the sun.
Pull at the weave
On cane or rattan, look at the front seat edge and where strands tuck into the frame. A lifted or split strand unravels further every time somebody sits down. Natural cane splinters and darkens with age; synthetic weave over an aluminium frame turns brittle only after long sun exposure.
Open the parasol fully
Crank or push the umbrella all the way open and closed twice. Watch the rib pivots for bent rivets, and check the fabric at the rib tips, where sun-rotted cloth tears first. Ask whether the weighted base is included, because a parasol without its base is incomplete.
