Is a used IKEA dining tables & chair worth buying?
IKEA has no store or authorised dealer in Pakistan, so a dining set here arrived with a household move or a personal import rather than through any shop. The compensating advantage is unusual for a used purchase: every piece carries an eight-digit article number, and the assembly manual and full parts list for that number are published free, so you can establish exactly what should be present before you agree anything.

Parts usually have to be imported or sourced from the grey market, so a repair takes longer and costs more — which matters more on an older unit than the build quality does.
There is no IKEA store, dealer or service network in Pakistan, so treat the fittings as consumables with no local supply and identify them by article number while the label is still readable. A carpenter can fit standard cams and dowels only where the blind-hole diameter and depth happen to match, and cannot fix anything into a honeycomb core away from the perimeter rail, which is why the solid pine and birch ranges are the ones local trades can genuinely repair.

Read the article number
It is printed on a label under the tabletop or under a chair seat: eight digits set out as three, three and two. It names the exact range, which is the only reliable way to know whether you have solid pine, veneered board or a honeycomb-cored top.
Pull that number's manual
IKEA publishes the assembly instructions for every article number as a free download, and the opening pages inventory each fitting with its own part number and count. Print it and count what the seller actually has before agreeing anything.
Measure before substituting a cam
The cam housings sit in blind holes of a set diameter and depth, at a fixed distance from the panel edge, with a dowel cut to meet them. A hardware-shop cam of a different depth will either miss the dowel groove or bottom out before it pulls the joint tight.
Tap across the tabletop
Several IKEA tops are board-on-frame with a paper honeycomb core: a hollow note in the middle, a solid one near the edges. Only the perimeter rail holds a screw, so a bracket or repair plate fixed anywhere else will pull straight out.
Account for the extension leaf
Extendable ranges either store a leaf inside the table or supply it loose. It is finished to match the top and cannot be remade in the same laminate or veneer, so a table sold without it is permanently a smaller table.

Sit on every single chair
Sit and shift your weight side to side on each one. A click or slight give where the seat rail meets the leg means the glued joint has opened. One chair is a small job; the same fault across a six-seater is the largest single cost in the set.
Test the table for wobble
Press down on each corner in turn on a level floor. A wobble that follows you around the table is uneven legs or a loose pedestal bolt. A wobble at one corner only is usually the floor, so repeat the test with the table moved a foot to one side.
Run a nail round the glass edge
Feel the whole perimeter of a glass top for chips and nicks, and look at the corners against the light. A chipped edge on toughened glass is where a break starts, and toughened glass fails all at once rather than cracking slowly.
Look along the top at an angle
Raking light shows what an overhead look hides: white heat rings, cloudy patches where hot dishes sat, and veneer lifting along the edges and joins. A solid top can be sanded and re-polished; veneer that has bubbled has nothing left to sand.
Compare the chairs to each other
Line the chairs up and compare grain, polish shade and upholstery. A chair bought later to replace a broken one almost never matches, and a set with an odd chair in it is bought as loose chairs rather than as a set.
Open and close an extension table
Slide the table open, fit the leaf and close it again. The slides should run without lifting, the alignment pins should be present and the leaf should sit flush with the main top. A missing leaf cannot be ordered separately for most tables.
